Improving Brawa Nr. 5504 ring light lamps

I really like the ring light lamps for German stations that have not had their lighting upgraded to modern lamps, so I decided a couple years ago that Emsingen station will get ring lights.

Welztalbahn: Emsingen station segment installed in layout

4 weeks after I started work on the station segment (see my MRH blog posts), it has now reached a level consistent with the neighboring segments, the maintenance facility and the town of Emsingen.

Making a HO crosswalk

I had some trouble figuring out how to make a German crosswalk that looked correct in HO scale.

Here's my prototype on the workbench before I replicate this for real on the layout.

I made this with 5 mm correction tape between two strips of masking tape to get straight, rectangular ends of the stripes.

Welztalbahn: Emsingen one week later

My previous blog entry showed were I started a week ago. I took the segment outside to document the current state.

This shot is impossible to do once the segment is installed in the layout. We're standing "in" the roundhouse and look North towards the freight shed.

Welztalbahn: Emsingen station area and terraforming on German-themed layout

I finally started construction of the all-critical connection segment in the town of Emsingen on the Welztalbahn. This segment will feature the main station building and road-side infrastructure of Emsingen station and pull together the Emsingen city segment on the right and the maintenance facility segment on the left.

Here's the situation before I started with the partially completed buildings at their future locations.

Telling a different story in a photo than on the layout

My HO Welztalbahn layout is reasonably small, though I'm thankful that I was able to acquire the 8x9ft real estate it occupies. For an operating layout, that is also supposed to have some scenery, this is not much space to work with.

I regularly post photos on my blog that are taken on the layout. One trick I started using a while ago is to take on-layout locations out of context and tell a different story in the photo than what you see on the layout.
