I thought this an interesting piece of trackwork  when there was a discussion on such things. Forgotten where, but please move, or totally delete, if appropriate.

Well as I said in my other post the width of the picture extending beyond the grey border bothers me, not sure why I'm not really anal retentive, at least not about all things.

So I looked at the html and see the text box inside the grey background box is 763 pixels wide, so the pictures should be a max of 763 to fit nicely, although 750 or 760 may be easier to remember. I use 640 lots of times since that is the next lower resolution, 640 x 480, below 800 x 600 which I bet is why 800 was recommended.

It's not hard at all in my opinion.  But I don't use a "smart" device to upload anything anywhere...

I use computers...preferably Linux based.

I use 750. It is easy to remember and balances nicely.

I my with Bill on this. Just easy to remember. I also edit my images to 750 px before posting to save space in my MRH account (I have a lot of images out there). Yes, that is another burdensome step. 

I also think it is not that hard. If you want to play the game (post pictures on MRH forums) you have to learn the rules (procedures for posting pictures).

That's quite the switch. 

If using Firefox (and also some others, perhaps) just do a copy/paste if the picture size is correct. If the picture is too large, the part cropped (cut off on the right) can be seen by using (in Firefox) "View Image Info" (right mouse click on image to bring up the menu). I did it on the 5-way turnout pictured above and find it is 800 pixels wide, so it did get "clipped" a bit.

If you select Copy Image, then you can paste into your post/reply as I do here:

@Bill D. the simple method only works for files that are hosted on a website and what gets inserted behind the scenes is the link to the image, so if the website you paste it from goes away (or changes the path to the image) so does the image displayed here.

And how would one know the picture is clipped, to do the extra work to see the entire image?

The advantage of hosting it here (uploading to the server) is if the image is larger and just the view is smaller (which is what you are doing when you set the width in the image properties dialog) you can just click on the image to get the full sized picture. And you might realize the image is clickable by the mouse pointer changing to a finger on the image. So this would allow you to post a bunch of thumbnails and then if the viewer wanted/needed they could click on the image to see the full sized version.

Would be nice if the default width could be set to 750 then the images would not get clipped at all and as a user you might not need to change the width when posting, but I don't know what that would do with smaller than 750 wide images.

 I am writing a few new blog posts and have smaller photos than 750 wide. I want to put them in locations in my blog OTHER than the upper left hand side of every sentence. How can I move a photo once I place it in the text box (This box) I am using Firefox and continue to get the circle with the line thru it saying "You shall not move this photo".

Here is what Bill B. said, but I am having no luck moving or resizing any photo I bring in from my photo server I have them uploaded to here on MRH. No dragging allowed.

Write the narrative in your text editor and paste it into your post.

Then go back and insert the photos one at a time in the correct spots in the text. The order in which you insert them is not important.

Once the pictures are in your post, you can drag them around or cut and paste as you like.

SO, when I grab the image, I get the little crossed out circle, but when I actually drag it away from itself, the circle goes away and the image comes along. Note there needs to be a blank line where you drag the image to.

If you want the image on the right, or middle, you can use the Left Align, or Right Align buttons in the toolbar.

But it's best if you then also set a margin using the Hspace and Vspace attributes in the image dialog. you can also set the alignment here too.

Thanks Bill for the great tips on managing images in posts.  I did not know they could be dragged.

I have made a new post with text followed by three images.  When I click "PREVIEW", two previews show:    "Preview Trimmed Version" and "Preview Full Version".

What will show when I "SUBMIT"?   Have I done something wrong?

Rick, Hit submit and review your post. If you don't like what you see, you can still edit it.

Has to do with where the post is displayed, when you view it on the forum you will get the full version.

The trimmed version is what shows when you click the more under Recent blog posts or click Blogs on the menu on the top right of the website.

Also if you view your blog posts from My account you get the trimmed version until you click on the post.

I recently started a blog here at MRH and uploaded quite a few pictures to be included.  While reading through other members blogs, I noticed that some pictures were clickable to go to the full size picture and others were not.  I went back to my blog and found the same thing, I could click on some pictures but not others.  As far as I know, I followed Joe's instructions earlier in this discussion when uploading and inserting each picture.  So why the difference?  I would like to be able to click on all the pictures to be able to see them in full screen mode.

If you have assigned a new size, the image should be clickable automatically if it was posted from a PC.

If the full image is already displayed, then there is no "click to enlarge" as it's not needed.

Thanks Bill.  I'm still puzzled.  As far as I know, all the pictures are roughly the same size, taken with a cell phone with the same settings.  Actually, there are two different phones (Samsung Note 3 & Note 8), but there is not a direct correlation between clickable pictures and the phone used.  All pictures were uploaded and then resized as they were used in the blog.  Should I have not resized them per Joe's instructions?  Or is there some other way to make the full size picture available?

Bill, I looked at the last image this post, the image is 1600x900 and it looks like Gary set the size to 780 when he posted it. So he changed the size but it is not clickable

This image is clickable. It became clickable automatically. It was a new upload.

This image was inserted using the URL of the image in the above comment...

This image also also inserted from the URL of the image in a comment... BUT...

I noticed this time that there were some extra characters after the .jpg which I removed.

It is clickable

If the image has extra characters after the .jpg in the url, then drupal does not know to link the image automatically.

This is the URL of one of the images in the blog that is not clickable:

If you remove the ?168 from the end it will become clickable.

Well done Bill. I guess I was close on my assumption. I didn't think to look for data beyond the JPG. Now he has to determine if it is just one of his two phones and which one, or perhaps each uses a different carrier.

Thanks guys.  Next question.  How do I remove the ?123 from the end of the uploaded .jpg file name.  Neither the original file on my computer or the file that now resides on the servers has the extension added to it.  I did click on the file properties of a posted image and it had the extension, but I could not remove it.  Also, I right clicked on an image and clicked on "view image" and that opened up the image full size.  Is there something that I am doing wrong that is causing this?

edit the post or comment, double click the image, remove the characters from the end of the file name in the dialog box, ok, then save the post.

Thanks Bill.  Ok, so I went back and edited some of the pics to remove the extra characters.  However, it only seems to sometimes work.  Some of the pics are now clickable, and some are not.  I went back a verified that the extra characters are still removed but still no go.  I added a new post to my blog this morning and removed the extra characters as each picture was added to the post.  After I submitted the post, none of the pictures are clickable.  One of the post that I went back and edited, it has four pictures in the post.  The first and last pictures are clickable and the middle two are not.

In reference to Dave's comments, all of the pictures posted so far were taken with the Note 3.  T-Mobile is the carrier if that helps.  However, the extra characters only show up when the pictures are added to a post.

I edited the settings of the images to be 750px wide and locked the aspect ratio.

Now they are all clickable. I have no idea why they were not clickable before I edited them.

Drupal is fickle. 

In the Image properties, copy the URL from the Image Info Tab into the URL on the Link Tab and set the Target option to New Window. This is nicer anyway as it leaves the original page open.
