Two prototype questions: Graffiti and Pantographs

I was wondering why locomotives always raise the rear pantograph on an electric?  I'm sure there's a reason, as well as a reason to include two in the first place, but I don't know what it is.

Also, when did graffiti start to be a problem on railroad cars?

If they cared they would do something about it

I simply do not accept that railroads care about tagging.

Railroad management has cut back spending money on everything except the weekly operating ratio numbers.

They have plenty of money to buy back stock and fund executive multi $million bonus payouts.

As for arrests, some of these projects take many hours to tag.  Nobody is worried about getting arrested.

Yesterday I watched some trains.  90 percent of the cars were tagged.  Even oil tank cars and ethanol tank cars.

Tag?

Why do people use "tag" instead of "vandalize?"

Why use the term Tag?

It is more descriptive, less general, shorter to write or speak and easier to spell. It also can infer vandalism if one is so inclined.

So It's OK to vandalize someone elses property?

First problem, 90% of those cars are not owned by the railroad they are owned by leasing companies, So I guess leasing companies like TTX, UTLX, GATX, CITX, etc don't care about their property being vandalized? Second problem, you believe because they are spending money on the financial wellness of the company, i.e. buying back stock, plus trying to attract and keep executives who hopefully will guide the company to a secure future, you believe they don't care. This is what has gone wrong with this country, because the railroads are not spending their money as you see fit, they must not care about anything, so vandalizing their property is OK.

I cannot believe people think it's OK to aim a spray paint can at another person's property, regardless if that property is owned by an individual or large corporation and think it's OK to deface it. How would you feel if that was your piece of property that just got defaced? Then defaced again just after you repainted it?

Personally I believe this thread has run it's course and needs to be locked!

Before tempers flame up

I'm going to go with that request to lock the comments.

Graffiti is one of those subjects that really get some tempers going, and we'd prefer to avoid that.

Pantographs, OTOH, if you'd like to continue discussing that, please start another thread. I find some of the answers and discussion on this thread very interesting.
