Steam locos

N-Scale steam locomotive with bouncing front end.

I am having trouble with a new Bachman N-Scale 2-6-0 locomotive. The front end bounces up and down synchronized with the drivers. Not a very loco-like behavior.

Is this something that will fade with break in, be user repaired, or need to be RMA?

Please see the attached video. The bounce is most evident once the loco gets past the bridge.

Thanks!

Sound Observations from a Steam Loco Cab

Hi All,

I recently had a terrific experience riding in the cab of an Alco 2-6-2 steam loco formerly number 25 of the McCloud River Railroad, now operating on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad (http://www.oregoncoastscenic.org/).

HOn3 Precision Scale Shay

Long long ago I got a KTM HOn3 class A shay from Precision Scale as a Christmas or a birthday gift from my wife. I ran it off and on for about 2 months until the white durlin ? gear cracked. It has sat in it's box or on a display shelf for close to 30 years now. Other than the gear it seems to be in pretty good shape.

At this point I have no idea if I will sell this or not, but I would really like to know if it can be fixed. Tried a google search on this and came up empty except for one on eBay for $500. Claimed it was a rare loco. Don't know if it is or not.

New BLI Y6b paragon3 wont run in reverse

Just unboxed this mammoth loco today and immediately a problem.   Looks great and works perfectly in Foward and neutral.

When i put it in REVERSE, it goes haywire.  Does not move.  Starting at speed step one, all engine sounds stop and i hear a distorted sound, sounds like a short, repeats in a loop while engine does not move.  Switching back to forward, it works fine.  Reverse, and just distortion.  Same on DCC as DC.

Running Trains

I have been running some trains and I picked these two to show to everyone.  The first video shows a Troop Train led by a Broadway Limited E6A/B with a consist of 15 Micro-Trains Pullman Troop Cars plus an old AHM heavyweight observation car.  I purchased the troop cars back when they were originally released by Micro-Trains some 10+ years ago and this is their first time running in a train.  There are some duplicate numbers but it is N-Scale and unless you really look closely, they are very hard to read.  The train consist is planned to run as an extra from time to time

Need help identifying an HOn3 locomotive

Hi all!
I need help identifying this HOn3 model:

I got it as is with a broken gearbox which is now being replaced with a new from NWSL.
What prototype does it have? And who made the model?
I'm going to repaint and decal it, so it would be nice to get it right.... :)

DCC Decoder Connection

I am having a problem with the Soundttrax DBX9000 connector that you use to make electrical connections between the steam loco and tender. I have just completed converting an older Riverrossi Berkshire "Nickel Plate" steam engine to DCC. This was a very nice conversion and works just great. The problem I am having is the connector plug, Soundtrax DBX9000 I am using doesn't go all the way into the female receiver part in order to make an electrical connection.

Spectrum 4-8-2 Heavy Mtn locos - Adventures in wiring, DCC/Sound

I just fixed the photo links on this blog.  The GW loco wiring is really crazy so this thread is an important reference for anyone that wants to upgrade one to DCC.

I haven't worked much on the layout or the mine kit since retiring from the job a few weeks ago.  Spring cleaning, family and honey-do's have had most of my attention.  But I did make some interesting purchases.

Any pointers on replacing a Paragon 2 decoder?

As the title says.

I have a Broadway limited Y6b where the decoder malfunctions.

It loses connection with the DCC and has a strange short.

When measured, I got an open circuit from the tender pickups to both sides of the drive wheels simultaneously....

I was thinking of ripping it out and replace it with a Econami 200 steam decoder.

Anyone has a schematic to show where the wires from the loco plug goes?

And, is it possible to connect the smoke system to it?

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Michael
