Layout design

Photo Backdrops

Photo Backdrops seem to more accessible lately and with Google street view the ability to create signature scenes looks very practical and affordable.

Neil Schofield, Scott Thornton, Joe Atkinson, Bill Brillinger, and Jim Six (among others) have all demonstrated that this is achievable and results in stunningly realistic and seamless transitions from the foreground scenery.

How to Compress a Yard

I recently moved to a new house and while I wait to take out some walls to fit my current layout I've been dreaming about my retirement railroad.

The prototype I eventually hope to model is the CN Kingston Subdivision. It's a double track mainline with two yards along the line, that while relatively small by railroad standards, are large by model standards if every track is included.

Cantwell and Chenoa RY company rework

My initial attempt at laying out Chenoa and the mountains was a dismal failure. While the engines would make the grade with a car or two only, operation was no fun at all. Because there was an open grid benchwork underneath that meant I had to install a net under the whole thing or suffer the consequences of engines hitting the deck. So I reworked this:

The Mud Bay & Western #2 - The New Plan

My last post was meant to introduce the topic and provide a brief history of the project so far. Today I want to start with the real meat of the project, the work being done at the new location. This post will be an overview of the plan for refitting the layout into the new room.

The New Location

The original location was in one side of a two car garage. The room we are moving to is located above one stall in a three car garage so the space is roughly the same size and shape, but is slightly bigger.

Shelf Layout Plan - Feedback Requested

Hi all. I have a space that is 16 feet long and have a family right-of-way to have one leg come down 6 feet on one side.

The Mud Bay & Western

I am finally embarking on my layout project. I am going to use this blog to track the build. I am new to MRH and to blogging so we'll see how this goes. Hope you enjoy it!

Introduction to the Mud Bay & Western

The MB&W is a fictional branch line set in the Puget Sound region in the late 60’s. The design goal is to maximize operation potential in the space available. It is a two-level, operation centric, N scale railroad that uses some less common (I think) techniques in its construction.

Designing a better runaround & what is a Tail Track

First Question:
I'm looking for the proper word/name/whatever one would use to describe these two dead-end track spurs that my long locos would go to prior to their backing down thru that dbl-slip turnout to escape that end of the peninsula? Is there a particular name would utilize in 'switching parlance??

I've been putting this off too long. This is the original Tupper Lake/Faust Junction peninsula track plan I was using as inspiration.
