Planning Software

HELP! Looking for recommendations for planning software for an Apple MAC. Having a home built that will give me a 16x16 space for a layout. Projected move-in date is near Christmas, so I have plenty of time to do it right! Am thinking about a U-shaped layout with a peninsula and like so many ideas I've seen here and in other publications.

I need HELP!

Quite awhile back I set aside some spaces on my new double-deck layout plan to have some logging scenes.

I labeled them Logging Tracks & Logging Interchange

XtrackCAD AND Raspberry Pi

This thread is intended to give and receive help in using XtrackCAD and the Raspberry Pi family of computers. It NOT intended to address either XtrackCAD or Raspberry Pi individually. It is hoped that it will allow the discussion of problems/resolution/tips/etc. to allow the combination of the two to be a happy and productive one.

I must admit I was an armchair modeler.

I must admit I was an armchair modeler for awhile.

My last HO layout was in 1978. It was in a spare room 10'x12'. Roughly based in Southern Ontario, running early steam. Then I had to move to a one bedroom apartment, so it went into boxes and into my storage locker in the apartment basement. Well, in 1980, sometime between putting the Christmas decorations in the locker and going to get the BBQ and balcony chairs in late April. I found I was victim of a burglary, the locker was bare. Luckily I had content insurance.

Redesigned harbor section of my layout

When I designed my layout 30 months ago, it was designed with operation in mind, catering for up to 6 operators and a dispatcher. After my first official operating session, I realized there was a serious design flaw in one area, the harbor. I wanted to have the water at the back of the layout, against the wall, so that I could animate a ship gently rocking with the waves in the harbor, by using a slow rotating motor, geared down even further to create a gentle up and down motion you experience when a ship is docked in the harbor.

Painted backdrops on textured walls

Starting the very early building process for the new layout now. The layout room has nicely done taped, textured and painted walls already that are straight and free of defects.  Rather than cover them with something else and then do painted backdrops I was thinking about doing them right on the wall.  It is a mild typical knockdown texture and I was thinking of doing a light skim coat to eliminate the texture before going for it.

Just wondering who has done this,  what your experience has been and of course pictures are always appreciated.

My new Layout in my new House

Hi all;

For those who do not know.  I have been in a wheelchair for 30+ years after a work accident.  Since then I had a stroke in 2007 so have no balance.  Combined with a heart condition I absolutely can not do crawling around.

searching for a new location

This topic is where I am seeking a new setting location for my new layout. I want only one town in a hilly setting where the NYC and PRR railroads interchanged. The town needs to be relatively small -- probably fewer than 5,000 population. I want both coal train operation and general freight to be featured with several local on-line customers. The setting will be 1927. The photo below is the type of setting that I am looking for.

I ask for your ideas and suggestions along your comments.
