Layout design

The ongoing making of a branch line terminus, and stories...

This ongoing project started at the beginning of 2013.

and was put on hiatus from March 2013

to December 2016.

The layout is almost ready, and now I'm having second thoughts

It's "go" time to start operating the layout. Then why am I having these second thoughts? Since 1979 I've been flying helicopters for America's Army. That's pretty much my whole adult life. My flying continues at age 60, although as an evil contractor. Most of these flying years has been in attack/gunship versions. Army flying is old hat stuff for me.

Pigeon Point

At the south end of the Delaware River Extension in Wilmington is the car float apron at Pigeon Point.  The P&R/RDG floated cars across the Delaware River to chemical plants in Carney's Point and Thompson's Point in New Jersey.  To simulate this I have a fold down shelf to hold the car float when it is docked.  I have been putting this off for some time trying to figure out how to build it.  Finally came up with a plan.  The float was made from .040 plastic sheet and will hold six 36 ft cars or eight 30 ft cars.  Construction of the float apron and

Murray River Bridge new layout construction end day 15.5 "bridging the gap" on a sectional layout.

As Murray River Bridge is a sectional layout, with each board being 5' 10" long and the bridge is 16' 8" I had to design a way of making sections of the bridge removable, yet being able to reliably maintain both an electrical contact and position of the track, I think I have cracked it using banana plugs and sockets.

Displaced is a Great Thing

Well we have absorbed some family displaced by Hurricane Harvey. The end result is my layout room has been re-purposed and it was a no-brainer. I still have the green light to build a layout, but smaller is the keyword here so I am now in the attic space with a total area of 8' x 8' for now. I am still trying to fall within the TOMA idea however I have had to move from a continuous running layout to a switching layout. There are no reversing loops or anything complicated other than a heck of a 4% grade to rise up from a lower level.

Sources & Story of My Layout Idea

Tracks Across the Prairie

ATSF 2nd District: The Cucamonga - Pasadena - East LA RR (TOMA)

Hi all,

Following good advice and lots of research i ended up with a draft version of the trackplan for the layout for my current space. As previously discussed in a TOMA related thread of mine (where i got considerable help), the idea is that i rework things on my current space by building TOMA modules originating from the desing of my future permanent layout in a next/future house. So thanks to the TOMA ideas and inspiration, i will be able to start working on my future layout now (or relatively soon :) ).

Murray River Bridge new layout construction day three, five and seven.

Hi All

some links to construction of my new layout

day three I build the frames (no base support) see if they all fit together on the decking.

day five My "bathtub" boards are taking shape, the bottom of the boards are 3mm MDF, this creates a smooth surface for moving the boards and protects the wiring, finally gives some torsional strength.

A proof of concept video

Having spent months planning, designing and redesigning, I feel like I have now gotten a railroad that I will enjoy building and will be a blast to run., This is a short video tour of what I hope it will look like.

Looking for Article in Model Railroad Planning 2008

About a year ago I lost all my Model Railroad Planning books due to a water leak. I am interested in reading Ken Patterson's sectional article from the 2008 issue. Would anyone have same that they could scan and email to me?
