Benchwork - Roadbed

Sub Road Bed Material

I have seen another, I think, layout using drywall as a sub road bed. I believe that Joe F also has used this material and I know it has been discussed here a bit before.   I am at a loss, all I can think of is negatives to using this material,

Suggestions for mounting under the roadbed slow mo switch machines when using 2" foam subroadbed???

I have been plodding along on a shelf-style test-track for HO.... mostly to install and test decoders in my existing fleet of lokeys, but also perhaps to try out the "latest" scenery techniques that have come along since I started building layouts in the early 1960's!  Wanna get ready for the "retirement layout" that hopefully will be abuilding in 2014.

Advice on benchwork construction

Hi all,

I'm after some advice on benchwork design for a multi deck layout.  I have read "designing benchwork for multi deck layouts" and this has provided me with some very valuable information to date.  However I'm looking at having a 24" (600mm) overhanging deck for the majority of the layout.  There are sections that may be upto a metre (39") and this is why I'm seeking help.

Starting Spline Roadbed

I have read a bit about using spline roadbed and right now I use two splines of clear pine space with spacers. I use risers (between the splines) as needed. The spline is attached to each side of the risers to secure it in place. But if you are making a solid roadbed 2 inches thick of 1/4 inch hardboard how do you secure it to risers?

Transfer table staging?

Hi,

I'm thinking of making a transfer table as my staging yard for a small switching layout. I haven't been able to find many examples so I'm putting it out there to see what you all think. Do you have one or have you seen something like this. I'm looking for ideas. I'll try to attach an image of what I'm thinking of.

Foam, lovely pink foam in California

We're re-roofing our house and that's required multiple trips to Home Depot in Monterey. On one of those trips, I was walking down the Insulation aisle and what to my wondering eyes did appear: pink Owens Corning extruded foam in several thicknesses. I don't know when they started carrying it, but if it's available here at HD it should be available elsewhere in California.

Rejoice all, for we have reached the promised land.

Need help with ballasting issues and woes

Ballasting trackwork is an area of weakness for me.  I've begun ballasting the track on my layout recently.  It's HO scale on masonite splines with styrofoam terrain covered with plaster cloth and Joe's plaster vermiculite mix.  I'm using woodland scenics medium ballast, and wetting it with 70% isopropryl alcohol, and glueing it down with a 3/1 glue/water mix with a trace of dish detergent.

Road Bed/Ceiling Tile/ Spline Questions and comments...?

Well i have been reading this forum nad topic for a couple of days now. As I am starting a new layout, and the first one tht will be a perminent layout., I have read so many opinions on this subject I have become confused on what to do?

1) Is spline the best? Is this something a first timer should do? Will this cut down on noise? Or should I combine it with cork road bed or vinyl road bed? Yes I have seen the videos by Mr. Fugate, but lets face it the is not a "newbie."
