Layout Construction

I am putting the cart before the house or vise versa. I have posted pics. before of finished areas and/or finished structures. But based on a post in the discussion section on benchwork I would like show what I did for my layout build. But bear in mind this was how I did it and is not the only way.

Flexible Drywall for Fascia and Backdrops On30 Mushroom layout

Well, I have decided to install 1/4" Flexible drywall for my On30 mushroom layout. If you watch the video I will explain why.

Progress and Practice

The weekend was spent building a concrete block wall along the front of the house to backfill with drain rock and divert some of the overwhelming amount of rain we had that turned everything into mud around here. Since the concrete takes a week to cure before I bust out the shovel and wheel barrow it seemed like an opportunity to get the layout room some benchwork.

Connecting Styrofoam to Traditional subroadbed.

Due to recent health issues, it has become painfully obvious that I won't be manhandling 4x8 sheets of 1/2 inch MDF (or portions thereof) down into my basement anymore. So, I've decided to finish my layout using 2 inch Styrofoam for the remainder of my subroadbed - which is mainly just the main yard and staging yards.

I'm looking for suggestions on the best way to connect the new Styrofoam subroadbed to the current 1/2 inch MDF.

Installing toggles in the fascia?

The other day at was at my local Lowes. I picked up some material for a fascia. This is 6" wide and 4' long. It is made from aspen wood and has very nice grain to it. It is 1/4 thick. I plan on using a clear satin finish to it. My problem is toggle switches. The ones I have do not have a long enough mounting shaft.I would like to use the ones I have instead of new. A little search around the web showed lots of switches but no info on the length of the shaft. I could use a short piece of thin masonite for mounting but I really like the look of the aspen wood.

Garage layout plan needs a bridge.

I have one side of the garage bench work complete. I need ideas on what to use as a "mainline run" spanning the width of my garage door (11') to the other half of the layout.

Cornhill & Atherton - The Helix Is In

The Helix Is In; which after my induction to the “top down” club at Christmas, was supposed to be the last job!

Following advice from Alan (wizard of LK&O)  I had a rethink and redesign of the helix.
