Operations
Steam comes to The Highland
After long delays, The Highland finally got its steam program together and began testing. Watch as we explain the operating plan and then follow the trains as they run along the line.
Scaleable operation
Another thread got me thinking about scaleable operation, the ability to operate with a varying sized crew. Aside from physical size, my theory is that on a sliding scale between all switching and all running, either end of the spectrum is very scaleable. A layout that is all switching can be operated by one person or a full crew just as easily. A layout that is all running can be operated by anything from one person to a full crew just as easily.

New life for a microbrush
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Has anyone else taken a used micro-brush, cut off the formerly fuzzy tip, and found a useable uncoupling tool? I can share a picture if you think it would be helpful.
Thanks for looking!

Floating Brake location on a siding
How would you accurately simulate or operate setting the hand brake on, say covered hopper railcar(s), at a loading/unloading siding without knowing the size of the railcars or how many are in the setout ? The railcars need to be held in place for coupling/uncoupling as well. In essence this will be a floating and non-fixed braking location on the siding.
Switching ops with remote crews: New remote-control panning for riding-on-car view
Now that we can operate my layout with a remote Conductor, Engineer and both at once, I get to railfan my short line at work several sessions a week. It's a whole lot of fun (and a bit spooky) to see the action happening with no one else in the room.
