Tools, tips and tricks

Quality Tools Matter

I'm helping a friend build a layout. He has little to no electrical experience or knowledge so I am helping especially with wiring. We ran a 14 gauge solid wire buss and we are using 20 gauge feeders. In soldering the wires together I brought my soldering station to his house. Well, that is a bit of a hassle and so I asked him to buy a soldering iron we could use at his place. Nothing fancy I said just a simple plug in 40 watt iron. Well he is frugal and when Canadian Tire had a sale on he bought a $15 25 watt iron. What a piece of junk. This iron normally retails for $20.

Polly Scale Milwaukee Road Gray

I'm looking for a replacement for the PollyScale Milwaukee Road Gray and hoping someone out there is MRH land can help. While I understand there are still ways to get the PollyScale color I am looking for a more sustainable, long term solution. I use the Milwaukee Road Gray as the primary color for my railroad lineside structures. It is the closest to the gray the Nickel Plate painted their building.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Moving the hobby forward with new techniques

In this thread: The REAL reason this hobby is aging out, Doug Meyer tries to take us all to task for being against new and better ways of modeling. In fact, his latest conclusion is:

I just think I will keep it to myself and I will look elsewhere for new methods and open discussions ...

Doug can do what he likes, but I'm going to try and be part of the solution instead of just complaining (if we even have a problem).

When to apply dulcote

How long should one usually wait before applying dulcote to a recently painted plastic surface that has been painted with acrylic paint?

I'm such an eager beaver to get on with finishing a project:

Rattle Can Box Car Colors

Over twenty years I've never mastered using my air brush.  I spend more time unclogging it than painting with it.  Recently my compressor stopped pumping air.  I sent it to the manufacturer who pronounced DOA, not fixable since it was over ten years old and parts not available.  The only thing I need to paint that is color specific are boxcar kits.  I notice Krylon has a good selection of colors that look close in their brown section.  Does anyone have recommendations of what colors are close to various box car colors.  I am trying to get by witho

3D pens

I was wondering if anyone has tried using one of the new 3D pens that are hitting the market. My thoughts have been towards using one to make some interesting trees for starters. The plastic filament seems to be fairly sturdy and the pen allows you to go vertical with strands of plastic fairly easily. I will give it a try and post some photos
