The Colorado and Southern in Sn3

I've been laid up with a foot injury of late which has given me allot of time to spend cruising the internet. Having now discovered this forum, I thought I would invite everyone to view my personal blog about my Sn3 exhibition layouts and modeling adventures. The link is : http://coloradosouthern.blogspot.com/

Thanks for your input. Darel

Anyone ever try 3-tab shingles for pavement?

I saw an opened bundle of 3-tab roofing at the home supply store, with single sheets of roofing shingle on sale for less than two bucks.  The top surface was course, but the underside was a speckled dark color, looking a lot like new pavement. The roofing material is flexible, and even cracks if crumpled, leaving a good pattern for aging pavement.  Has anyone here ever used this stuff for roadways and parking lots?

Jasper CNR

I'm planning to be in Jasper Alberta very briefly next weekend (arrive 1600 Saturday on Via No2, leave 1430 Sunday for Vancouver on No 1).  Anyone know of any interesting railfan sites within walking distance of the station?

Building a GE 85 ton steeple cab: The latest print has arrived

My updated 3D print of the 85 ton steeple cab arrived this week. All my previous print flaws were corrected, and additions printed as well.

Updated 85 Ton GE comparing the two models

Generally you can't tell much for differences from this shot, but the big difference is the beefed up truck .

Treelines - A Backdrop on the 8th Sub

I was looking for another project of limited scope that would still deliver some impact, so settled on finishing the backdrop behind my Junction City yard.  The yard is supposed to be on a valley floor adjacent to some river bottomland like the prototype UP yards at Riverdale and Ogden, UT, as well as the former D&RGW Ogden yard now used by a shortline.  The basics of the trees are similar to those needed for backdrops for other prototypes as well.

Posting issues with the Forum and Kindle Fire HD last night.

Last night, between 11:30pm and midnight, I was reading forums using my Kindle Fire HD.  I found a post that I wanted to respond to.  I typed out my response and suddenly about a paragraph into it I could no longer type anything.  So, I tried editing my post.  I could delete, but I couldn't type characters.  Yet, the predictive text on the Kindle was functioning while I was typing characters.  It was just the characters were not appearing on the page.  Has anyone run into this?!?!  Was there a hiccup in the forum page last night?

May '13 - comment on stripwood staining fixture

I looked at this article with great interest, being that I'll be handlaying HO track on one or more modules (code 70). The method sounded really good until Mr. Napper said he had to stain the ends of the ties once they were cut. That was a real turn-off for me. It's too much work.

I thought I'd share my method, not that I think it's better or anything, but it's what I've found is cheap and works for me. Caveat: I have tried this only on balsa ties. I have not yet tried it on basswood. I have also not read extensively on staining methods for ties.

Recycling material - my explanation or apology.

Lately I have been posting material that I previously posted as it seems with the great influx of new viewers / members that they haven't seen it before. I'm starting to sound like some of those paper mags that repeat. On one hand I don't want to miss giving info to those who want it, but on the other hand I don't want to bore those that have already seen / heard it. Case in point: I just posted a link to background sound files (free) that I posted previously.

What to do?

Cornhill & Atherton - Poor Man’s Power Districts

Nothing innovative here – just a point of view and approach that may be of interest to some.

When I built my chainsaw I initially used DC and then converted to DCC to make objective comparisons. No surprise that DCC won the contest, but I was introduced to the dubious pleasure of obscure short circuit sleuthing.

One of the strangest was an intermittent short related to poor manufacturing tolerances on the built in switch of a solenoid turnout motor.

Previous MRH issues

Hi,

I have a friend who just found MRH who lives across the pond and he asked me if there is any way he can download previous issues of the Ezine. I told him I'd post and try to get an answer.
