New announcements from Athearn Genesis at Trainfest today

Athearn announced several new and updated Genesis locomotives at Trainfest this afternoon.

Starting with the "Topeka Cab" version of their GP7/9 model. Replicating the locomotives produced by Santa Fe starting in 1972, the locomotives feature "chopped" short hoods and will be available in Phase I GP7u with 86" tall engine compartment doors, Phase II GP7u with 86" and 82" tall engine compartment doors as well as Phase II GP9U. Delivery dates and prices TBD.

Norfolk Southern GE 70-Ton Loco (A Cheapskate kit-bash)

I really enjoyed the article in this month's MRH (October) on modeling a NS GE 70-tonner. I own a model of that loco from Bachmann, and it got me to thinking about some work I could do on it. Up to that point, it was detailed and painted for my freelance RR, but I have been wanting to find an obscure, short line prototype railroad to model.

TAPP truck modifications?

Gang,

I was going through my junk box and found a couple of trucks made by TAPP. I seem to recall that these trucks are the ones that came on a Front Range Products GP7. I have never used them and apparently, they do not run very well, what a surprise...  These FRPs came with Mashima motors but poorly running trucks. Sad, because the truck sideframes are some of the most detailed ones I have seen, especially considering they were last produced about 15 yrs ago.

Coupler for an RS10

I have an N scale True Line Trains Gold series Loco that now has a broken coupler. I have not gotten too far into changing all my couplers over to Micro Trains yet so I am not all that familiar with them yet. I looked at the conversion sheets on their site but nothing is mentioned for True Line Trains. Can anyone assist me in getting the right one for this loco?

Thanks

Greenwich & Johnsonville RS3

Jim at Highball Graphics strikes again.  He recently released a decal set for Delaware & Hudson subsidiary Greenwich and Johnsonville.  I just can't pass up a bright orange RS3!

Proto 2000 E8 A&B units

Hi

Does anyone know if the chassis on Proto 2000 E8/9 A&B units is the same? In other words, would I be able to install a B shell over an A chassis?

thanks

Bob

What Loco to buy?

New guy here. I'm constructing a 4 x 8 layout for DCC. I want to purchase a decent locomotive DCC ready. preferably a Santa Fe F7 unit. I don't want to take out a loan to do this. I'm a retired electronics technician and have installed decoders in starter set loco's. I'm looking for something with more power and reliability. I just don't know what brand to choose. I'd like to stay under $100.00 if possible.

Thanks Gerry
