Recessed Car Card Boxes

I have been working on the recessed car card boxes for Coatesville.  I want to maximize the aisle space so I recess all the switch controls and car card boxes into the fascia.  I use horizontal pockets, pigeon holes, made from wood, hardboard and lath.

Modeling the Pre-Depression Years: 1900-1930

Let's talk about modeling in the years before the Great Depression. This blog is an open discussion to assist modelers in understanding prototype railroads and industries so we can better recreate these on our home layouts.

Helix Pieces have arrived.

As part of my new layout here in Emo, I decided to add a helix and create a double deck layout. As of yet I don’t have a workshop to do any specialized cutting so cutting helix sectors was on hold.

Berlin 1929 - Gas Works Track Plan.

I’ve not been very good at keeping you guys updated about this project. I keep taking piccies and I just can’t get around to doing the blogging bit. I should be more of an exhibitionist, I’m not built that way. In the intervening time since my last post, I’ve played around with it, sorted one or two things out, and finally sorted out what the benchwork is going to look like.

Lack of yard lead tracks

One of the things that I notice on even the largest layouts is the lack of yard lead tracks in their yards.  I consistently see large yard ladders with no apparent way to actually work them.  What I mean is a way to actually disassemble or assemble trains.   A yard ladder without a lead track to me looks like a place to simply park trains.

Here is where I got the most useful info on designing a functioning classification yard.

Scenic Sub Project Update 4 - Benchwork Begins

Started benchwork on the Scenic Sub portion:

Santa Fe - High Desert Division - Update

Hi All,

I have attached the current version of the track plan that I am working on.  For the most part its a double deck layout with lower staging.  I am looking for tips, concerns, possible changes and suggestions.  Below are a few stats about the layout plan.

Railroad:  ATSF & DRGW along with BN, UP, C&W and Santa Fe Southern (Kansas and New Mexico Divisions)

Era:  1990-1996

Scale:  HO

Min Radius:  30"

Turnouts:  Main Line #8 all others #6 (fast-tracks)

Track plan critique

Hello folks. I've finally screwed up my courage to post a track plan I've been working on for some time. It's meant to be a single module with staging on the right side. As of now this is all the room I have.

Anyhow, here we are...my first real attempt at an N scale railroad empire. The module is 18" x 60" I'm using Atlas code 55, the turnouts on the main are #7s and #5s everywhere else.
