What is this?

While searching on Google Maps the Colton, CA yard, I discovered what seems to be a UP car. What is this car?  Are those solar panels on the roof? What is that cupola for?

Renumbering Rolling Stock Number

I am new into N Scale for a year now and have purchased a number of rolling stock cars.  Several of the cars have the same road number.  In order to make them unique I would like to change the number on one of the cars that have a duplicate number.  I have been thinking of just changing the last digit but do not know if it would be easier to change the whole number.  What is the procedure to change the number?  Would also appreciate a suggestion for a vendor to get the decals from.

Appreciate your assistance.

removing roof from Walthers trainmaster passenger cars

Is anyone else having trouble removing the roofs from the Walthers Trainmaster passenger cars? I have three that I have not been able to get off. (I did get the roofs off on three others)

Stored P2K locomotives

I am aware of the split gear issues with the older blue box P2K locomotives, but I have several that have been stored for many years and I plan to utilize them on the layout that is in the design phase. What can one do to clean the motor when the lubrication turns to the "peanut butter" substance without an all out replacement of the motor?

Hello,

Who made these HO trucks and wheel sets?

I came across some HO scale trucks and wheel sets that I have not seen before and I am wondering who made them. The side frames and bolsters are metal and they have copper colored springs similar to Kadees. However, there is one big difference, the springs are much thicker than what Kadee makes. Except for the color they almost look prototypical.

Other detail differences that I noticed include the bolster hole for the screw. The top part of the hole is hex shaped.

Make coal loads sparkle

Some people prefer coal loads with shiny bits that imitate hard anthracite coal. I make coal loads sparkle with Pan Pastels powder. Works great on tenders and revives dusty plastic coal loads.

Specifically, I use Pan Pastel 20014 – Pearl Medium – Black Coarse.  The Coarse has more noticeable sparkly bits than the Pearl Black Fine.  It costs about $7 for a small container in 2016, a dollar more than the matte black powder.

Identifying flat car and tank car

This is something I would like to model this fall, but I have no idea the type of tank car this is or if this is just a tank car being shipped?

Bad electrical contacts happen to real trains too

Looks like getting good electrical contact can be a problem in real railroads as well. Here in the North Bay, we are anticipating the beginning of commuter rail service on the new Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) system. It looks like the service will not meet the "late 2016" launch date due to malfunctioning signals. Why?

Here is a quote from The Argus Courrier:

"In SMART’s case, the problem is thought to be related to the cars not making proper contact with the rails, Rabbitt said.
