Locos - Rolling stock (general)

Getting past clip type DCC decoder mounts.

This is a three step prep.  When you want to convert from one style of decoder to another, this procedure might work well for you too.

A clip type decoder holder is a convenience for the locomotive manufacturer.  The first thing I do is to cut the “ears” or clips off the decoder holder with a pair of flush cutters.  Next I might file the cut area flat if I intend to use Walthers Goo, silicone gasket sealant or rubber cement to attach the new decoder that way.

Railgon weathering

I mustered up the courage to do some weathering on my Arrowhead Models Railgons.  These were the most expensive freight cars on my roster so a bit twitchy about doing it.  I think they turned out fairly well.  More here:

My freelance NS and CSX railroad.

Welcome to the Schmidt Division of CSX and the Berry Division of NS in HO Scale.

The name of Schmidt for the CSX division is named after my late grandfather who worked for the railroad for 50 years. The name of Berry for the NS division is named after a close friend of mine who honestly got me back into train both model and prototypes.

Athearn/Roundhouse disappointment

I recently bought 2 Athearn/Roundhouse Canadian National 40' stock car kits: #2924 & 2925.

For the price I paid, I was somewhat disappointed. Rather than prototypically-faithful, they turned out to be updated tooling for the old Athearn Blue Box kits minus the horn-hook couplers. They had cleaned up the underfloor casting but did not correct the placement of the brake cylinder and air reservoir. And the cars still needed extra weight to meet the NMRA RP, and replacement of the plastic wheelsets.

locomotive parts

I am looking for parts for the Athearn/Roundhouse Old Time 2-8-0 or 4-4-0. Are parts available anywhere? So far, I am striking out.

I am also looking to pick up a used Athearn/Roundhouse Old Time 2-8-0, preferrably with DCC/sound. If anyone has one and is willing to part with it please let me know.

Thanks,

Jim Six
