Benchwork - Roadbed

A Shelf-Based Switching Layout

Work has started on my shelf-based switching model. I was originally inspired by the "Summer Shelf Shunting Project” by M.C. Fujiwara (which was, in turn, based on Byron Henderson’s “Alameda Belt Line”).

I was all set to start when my wife said “I think you should make it bigger.”

“How much bigger were you thinking?” I asked.

“You should make it a show piece” she replied.

Concept for N-Scale Oval/Elliptical Spline Hybrid Helix

Since I had to decide what type of construction (spline vs other) to use in two helixes, and with the comments that I received from the post I made the other day, I've come up with a concept on how to build a test helix that combines spline sub-roadbed with two straight sections to reduce the virtual grade.  The first jpg (n-scale helix top design) depicts a general drawing of the helix entrances and exits.  The second jpg (n-scale helix 1) depicts how I plan to construct the test helix.  I was particularly concerned about the gaps on the sides and the middle that woul

Walk Through Lift Gate

I am interested in finding a good plan on how to make a simple walk through lift gate for operators to easily pass between the inside and outside of a layout.

Columbia River Crossing - N scale shelf layout

Finally I have made some headway on the layout!  I got the last filler module glued and screwed together last night.  I drilled a largish hole for the wiring to pass thru the endplates and got all the modules bolted together.  They still need to be shimmed and then screwed to the shelf brackets.

More roadbed work on the G&AM

I have added risers to the subroadbed I cut out yesterday. Now it starts to look more like a railroad.

First subroadbed for the G&AM!

I have cut the first plywood subroadbed. I have decided to start with the east end of the railroad and work my way west.

I have made small changes already to the plan - I left out a siding because it looked too crowded - but in general my ideas seem to work out so far. It certainly helps that this is the third edition of the G&AM, doing it over and over again can improve your work!

Using Spline Roadbed in Helix

I am in the process of rebuilding my N-scale layout in a dedicated out-building (interior space 15'3" x 24'11").  The out-building is heated and air conditioned.  The layout was previously in a large room in my house but had to be torn down to make room for family (kids & grandkids).  That layout was an N-scale version of Bruce Chubb's original Sunset Valley but with an ATSF flair.  The concept for the new layout is blending some of my old one with some of CHuck Hitchcock's previous ATSF Argentine Division but in a freelanced fashion.

Benchwork for the G&AM is complete

I've done it: the benchwork is complete and 65 lights have been installed. Now I can start cutting plywood. We will see whether my track plan survives the contact with reality.
