New Layout Board Construction

Begrudgingly I've decided to scrap plans for my 2" X 8" freestanding streetcar layout in favor of a smaller streetcar shelf layout housed in the closet. I've learned a lot in two years and from experience I was able to build something better and more practical.

Idea for fascia shelf and car card billboxes

I recently brainstormed with my mechanical engineer brother the whole fascia-mounted operator worktable and billbox configuration.  We turned the pencil/pick holders perpendicular to the fascia so they could be serve dual-purposes as the structural braces for the shelf.  We landed on this design showing two choices for the shape for the pencil/uncoupling pick holders:

wire connectors

What kind of wire disconnects can be used with AWG 22 brass wire for a lift out section ?

Neodymium magnets for uncoupling?

Does anyone have experiences with neodymium magnets in the roadbed for uncoupling Kadees? Occasionally they are called super magnets.

I know some people swear by using bamboo pics but my hands are not steady enough.

Thanks

Middle school model RR: risers, shortcuts and responsibility

One way that I try to deal with problems is to consider how they resemble other problems that have already been solved, then model or adapt those solutions.  To me, a huge portion of what we experience as creativity lies in how we are able to see those resemblances.

The New TSR rises.......

How time fly's.... In May I started taking down the old TSR. It stands now as an empty room painted in a neutral color, ready for the hew owner of the house. I will post a few pics soon.

On Sept 2 we moved into the new house and on Sept 9th I took the big pile of wood that I had salvaged from the old layout and re-started again. Sorry, no track plan yet, though I do have a vision I am working toward.

Here is my first 90 days of effort, combining new and old wood into the new bench work

Walthers 90' Turntable Stop 1?

In several places the instructions for the Walthers 90' turntable (DCC version) talk of Stop #1 and to refer to the template to see where that is. Unfortunately, it's not on the template. The optical sensor is referred to as the zero point but is not equated to stop #1 anywhere. Maybe that's it?

I searched the MRH search and Google with no results.

Anyone else solve this issue? Thanks.

Home Depot Laser level to calculate grades

Good morning. I've recently moved, and with the move my layout is in a new garage (that is how we do it in Florida). My garage has an uneven floor. I am considering a new digital level from Home Depot (Empire True Blue Digital Lazer Level) that also calculates grades. Do any of you have experience with such a tool?
