Operations

Operations using a Train Elevator

With no room for a helix, I will likely be building a 6-ft long train elevator (vertical lift) between the two decks of my planned n-scale railroad (6 feet matches my maximum expected train length).

My question here is *not* about *building* a train elevator. Rather, I'm looking for some creative thinking regarding OPERATIONS when using one.

Were there any *prototypical* reasons for a train to *always* stop at some point on the mainline for a while, then move on? What might it be doing (as a model railroad thought) while it pulls onto, stops, raises, then drives off the elevator?.

Middle school model RR: we begin operations

We made remarkable progress installing feeder wires before the kids (and teachers) had a week off for Spring Break. I was disappointed that we didn’t quite finish as I had hoped that the break would be the pause before we started operating. So I snuck in during the break and finished up the feeders.

Bad car order forms

Hi Guys

I was curious if any of you guys have made bad car order forms at all? Id like to have something a little nice then just a piece of paper for rolling stock that I have to remove from the layout to be fixed at the workbench.

Thanks

Jeremy

Tehachapi TTTO session

Two or three day TTTO sessions on the La Mesa Club's Tehachapi Pass layout occur 4-6 times a year.  The video is from the latest session on the weekend of 11-12 April, 2015.

Info on participating can be found at:  http://opsontehachapi.com/requestform.html

Operations,dispatch and communication

I'm getting to the point where it's time to start setting up for operations on my railroad.  The layout should be OPS ready by the end of the year.  Haven't decided on a program as of yet but I want to start setting up a dispatch panel and I'm contemplating what kind of communications system to use.  I'm not a fan of the two-way radio (could be persuaded to change my thinking) and would prefer wired hand held communication.

Layout update April 10, 2015

Some operation changes and some more work on the tracks.

How to discontinue and find a home for husband's "N" gauge layout

My husband passed away last year and has quite an extensive layout.  Where and how do I start to find a new home for it?  Are there places that would take it as a donation?

A little blinky-dinky

Taking a break from track work (!) I decided to install some working grade crossing signals. Looks like I'll have to scratch build the one for Highway 61 (as described elsewhere), but I had this one in a $15 Bag-O-Details I bought last year off flea-bay:

Small terminal yard

I've been working on a terminal industrial yard design which is adjacent to a city scape.  The design is based in part on a John Armstrong design and on the design found in "The Essential City Yard: OP session - http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/22008.
There are 3 warehouses and three factories to switch.  There is also an intermodal (container yard).
Turnouts are No. 6 Peco (code 83), squares are 1ft.

Workable? missing something?

JMRI Coverage in MRH

I am glad to see the JMRI coverage in MRH.  I have been using it for years, but only the "Operations" module.  I'm hoping that this part of the program will be covered in depth as it has a rather complicated learning curve.  I got help in another forum to get it setup and really enjoy using the switch-lists and other functions to add interest to an operating session.  I think it would be useful if the developers made this portion of JMRI available for iOS on the iPad,  - Bill
