DOH!!!

I have just discovered a solution to something that was starting to bug me on this forum. When following a particular topic I have, up to now, clicked on the Title and then had to scroll all the way to the bottom of the first page to select what I think was the last page I looked at.
If instead you just click the link in the "Replies" column it takes you straight to the last page you looked at (assuming you are logged in of course).

Am I hust stoopid or is there anyone else out there that hadn' t already figured this out. :-)

Only one of us has worked with a CAD program and would like to find a program that is easy to use for all user.

Stack Focusing

After taking pictures outside with my unfinished diorama a close look at the pictures shows very little depth of field, I discovered I had my F stop setting wrong. I had forgotten that a large F stop number closes the iris down for better depth of field. I also discover that the Cannon Power Shot SX20IS only has a max setting of F8. Hardly good for great field of depth. So off I went searching for a Stack focusing program. I found one here.

Modeler Tip - How to erase shadows from your backdrop

Room lighting can cast shadows on your backdrop ruining pictures and viewing. A shadow of a tree or structure looks horrible on the backdrop. I have a tip on how to eliminate lighting shadows on backdrops and have used this method sucessfully on my previous Richlawn Railroad layout. The trick is to leave a small (2 - 3") gap between the back of the benchwork and the backdrop / wall. Next, place a light or lights underneath the layout where the light can shine up in the gap onto the backdrop. I used can style uplights with standard (dimmable) bulbs.

Protecting against UV light

I have been reading Ben Kaur's article in the July MRH (3rd Place in the $500 layout contest) and noted his comments regarding the damage that UV light will make to your investment. I noted his rather extreme measure of covering the window with sheet foam and blackout curtains. I also noted his planning consideration of having the layout room available for the primary purpose of sleeping - bedroom perhaps?

Destroying the Illusion

I’m talking about the moment when the thought: “Is it a model?” turns into “Yep, it’s a model”……….

I am curious about what people think are the primary culprits when it comes to realism killers.
This isn’t intended to be an opportunity to criticise people’s work but more a way of identifying improvement opportunities.

As Prof Klyzr says “Aim to Improve” and there never was a better bit of advice.

Silver bearing solder paste

Just found out there is such a thing as silver bearing solder paste.  Evidently, one spreads out some paste over whatever is is you want to solder.  Then, touch the iron to it and the paste burns off leaving a silver solder joint.

I like to use silver bearing solder for soldering point rails to throwbars as it's supposedly stronger than other solders.   I wonder if this stuff would work for that purpose?

Has anyone used this stuff in our hobby?  If so, on what?

Thanks,

John C

What type of Soldering Iron to use for feeder wires

Hi, about to start my N scale layout.  I used a weller soldering iron to solder my droppers to the track for my HO layout.

With the smaller scale track I was wondering whether to by a resistance soldering iron to minimise the chance of melting ties.

Any thoughts/experience pout there in the community?

Micro Mark have a small unit on sale which prompted this post.

Cheers
