Hartford NMRA Convention - Day 1
July 6, 2009 - Just completed the first full day at the NMRA National Convention in Hartford. We shot video of several clinics and will be posting them on MRH Theater in the coming weeks.
One of the more interesting highlights of the first day was the Operations Road Show that teaches Timetable Train Order operation.
Is this a hobby or a job?
Aftre reading a few of the notes here about scratchbuilding I find the title question coming to my mind. Adn, if one thinks about it, one has to realize that modelrailroading is a job for most of us.

Model Railroad Potpourri
This month I have a little progress on a few different things:
I have finally completed my AC Static Grass Flocker Mark I
I have practiced painting my bridge abutments
I have begun to ballast my track.
This is kinda silly, with the magazine coming out tomorrow my timing is poor, but here we go..
Procrastination and Scale Rails.
I read something interesting in the current issue of Scale Rails. It was two page article describing something that either has afflicted all of us at one time or from which we are currently suffering: Procrastination.
I hate it when that happens
In the wake of the Giant Claw Incident of last week, I was finally able to get my imaginery n-scale work crews back to work on the layout. They had been terrorized by a black bird which had somehow found its way into my basement coming down the chimney flue and luckily didn't end up in the flue leading to the boiler.

"Horailnut" R.I.P...
Time For A Name Change...
What does an "horailnut" do when he has sold most of his HO stuff on Ebay and is now a devoted N scaler? He becomes known as "nrailnut." It will take a while to get used to seeing that nickname... More to follow, as this is only the beginning...
The Giant Claw
Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s Hollywood made alot of horror movies. As kid I remember going to the movies on Friday afternoon's to see some of those gems (not) with my firends after school. It was a good way for our mother's to get us out of the house while they got ready for the Sabbath and it was cheap at 25 cents too. When I got older they showed many of these *gems* on TV as well and I watched them while doing homework or building one of what must have been thousands of models.
Howard Zane
I recently ordered Howard Zane's My Life with Model Trains. If you haven't read it you are missing out on something special because he offers another approach to the hobby and we can always use something like that. Besides, being a character, Howard tells the story of his model railroad (all 2,850 feet of it at the present time) amd how it came to be. He does it with great photos and lots of text.
By the Lumps on our Head!
At this point I have pretty well beaten up the horse; we're not much different now from who we were long ago, and many of the arguements then are still arguments now. Heck, I just saw an article lamblasting the idea of scale operating couples, placing the dichotomy that couplers will have to be either larger and functional or to scale and dummy. And I saw another calling for a need for remote operating couplers and arguing against those who prefer to manually do it because that's how the prototypes do it! I almost shudder to think how similar these
