Working on my spray booth this week.
Edit: The second part of this with the completed spray booth is here.
I have started work on a home made spray booth. I am using a 273 CFM squirrel cage blower:
Taking the DCC Plunge
Last week, after spending way too much time reading about DCC, I took the plunge and purchased a DCC starter set (Digitrax Zephyr). The cost of the starter sets is not that steep and neither are the decoders. For me, the greatest amount of frustration I have had is with decoder installation.
Further refining my benchwork plan
As you know I have been working on a benchwork plan for my under construction layout. I am going to move it over to 3rd Planit but I thought I'd show you the last hand drawn version of the plan and discuss it in a bit of detail. So here is version 3. As you can see, I've made the aisles wider on the right side of the peninsula and at the top of the peninsula. I've also written some appropriate dimension information on the diagram as well. You may not be able to read it but don't feel because sometimes I can't either.
Virtual reality image - a Model Railroad Hobbyist trademark!
BLAST FROM THE PAST ... This was originally posted in 2008, back when MRH was still just an idea in formation.
One of the trademarks of Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine will be our virtual reality images that go with our modeling project articles. Here's a little example to show you what one of these VR images is like:
Causeway Engineering Needs Redo
After completing the framework for the shorter of the two causeway sections I have realized I have a bit of a problem that needs be resolved. The attached photos show the causeway next to a bridge abutment I plan to cast in plaster and trim down to size. Clearly the slope of the causeway exceeds the size of the abutment which is not how these things are engineered. I need to either change the slope of the abutment, raise the height of the water, or some combination of both. I need to be careful not to make the slope too steep.
Great Train Show in Raleigh, NC
We went to the Great Train Expo on Sunday here in Raleigh and they had a good many booths this time around, but one thing that really got me was the number of vendors who seem to price their items at twice the amount most people can afford to pay. Now my LTS Train Buddy had a section too, and I spent $140.00 on stuff from him because he is always 20% to 25% below MSRP for most items. This is a photo of Kim Parker at TB explaining something of importance to Monique, but I cannot remember what he was talking about.
Construction Start Up
Today it's 16 days since I left the army, and today I can celebrate the start up on construction.
Welcome Back
After a 8-year hiatus I am back into the hobby of Model Railroading. I just got done cleaning out my side of the garage when my eight-year old kindly asked if I could set up the railroad. It's my first layout -- roughly a double loop on a 4x8 sheet of plywood. The legs had long since been removed and the wiring was in a shambles. But lo and behold I was able to get trains running by the end of the day! (He was quite excited). Now I feel myself being pulled (and hopefully pulling my son along with me) back into the fun of model railroading.
Base for a water feature in place.
I have just completed installing a base for my water feature. Its 1/4" plywood supported on the edge of the facia and by risers attached to joists at six points. I sealed it with gloss medium which needs sanding again. Learning point- install bases for water feature BEFORE installing facia! This was a real pain the butt.
