Big Boy verses Allegheny

With all of this recent talk about the 'new' Big Boy', I just had to go back to comparisons among the big steam engines,...particularly the C&O Allegheny.

I found this VERY interesting comparison,...plus a number of follow-on postings.

Bachmann EM1

Now that North West Short Line is out of business.  Does anyone have a source for gears? I am looking for gears for the Bachmann 2-8-8-4 EM1.  Bachmann does not sell the part. Part # 00F02

0-4-4T Switcher, Identify Small Steam Engine?

Several years ago I acquired this small steam engine from an estate sale here in FL. What I noticed about it right away was all the nice detail that had been added to it. The gentleman had put some very nice workmanship into it.

It doesn't run at the moment, but I'll figure that out once I get my layout up and running. It's quite a heavy little loco, so its tractive capability should be quite good.

It has no markings as to its origin, so I was wondering if someone might recognize what it started out life as??

Bachmann 2-6-0 DCC problems

I purchased a Bachman 2-6-0 sound value DCC locomotive a couple of days ago on Craigslist for $50, which I thought was a decent price as the locomotive looks like it has spent its life in the box. The gentleman  I made the purchase from told me that he tested it that morning on his test track and the locomotive ran both directions and made all the sounds it was supposed too. But.......when I got it home and put it on the layout with my NCE system the only thing it does is idle....it does not move either direction. So the sound works but nothing else.

Repainting my LGB mogul

Hi all, I started the repaint and fixing up of my mogul.

The first step was a thorough cleaning with automotive pre-prep.

Powerbase, a magnetic method of increasing the traction of our locos

A reference to this traction technology just came up on another subject thread where the gentleman was searching for a method(s) to increase the pulling power of his 2-6-6-2 Spectrum steam engines.

Spectrum 2-6-6-2 on a 2% grade

Is it even possible to get a Spectrum 2-6-6-2 to pull 10-13 coal hoppers up a 2% grade? I had planned on having a fleet of five or six of these to use as the mainstay of my coal-hauling fleet just like my protoype. I already plan on going back to the two I have and figuring how to cram weight into the steam and sand domes as well as some lead sheets to the tender for more pulling power.

HO steam sound decoders and chuff rate

Hi everyone,

I'm at the planning stage for installing sound decoders in my HO steam engines, and have what I hope is a quick question ;)

I recently watched a Soundtraxx YouTube video describing that the Tsunami 2 decoder reads the back EMF from the motor to determine the commutator position.  This way, they claim, you can set the chuff rate CV (114) at low speed and it will remain in sync at any speed.

New Day model

I purchased an HO scale 4-6-0 camelback. It is mostly cast with some brass. It is stamped "New Day Japan". I have seen these before & believe they are from the 50s. I would apreciate any info. you could give me....thanks

united brand brass steam

well some i just bought, some are old out of storage.

but in my steam, the united built labeled brass steam, have almost no problems, just needed oil.

couple other brands need a bit of work. but just out of there boxes they ran good, so just maybe any new brass will only be the united brand.
