DCC - Electrical

Build a simple push button controller
The electrical switches you see most often on model railroads are toggles. It's no wonder, they do the job, they are easy to understand and connect, and they give a visual indication of layout status. However, some functions can be performed better with push button switches, particularly if you wish to control a function from two locations. The downside of pushbuttons is they can seldom do the job alone. They usually require an indicator light, and remote operation implies some sort of circuit that is being operated.
My first intro to decoder issues.
I bought a Kato sd40-2 with Tsunami sound. The price for both was less than the cost of the loco so the decoder was basically free. I think the previous owner let it go so cheap as it had some problems. When placed on the track, the prime mover would start up but no other sounds and it would not move. Further investigation revealed the truck wires were loose in the spring clips and the band from the bottom motor lead was very loose. I did a reset but still problems. After playing with it, it would start up and then shut down and do nothing. oops! I broke something?

Spectrum 4-8-2 Heavy Mtn locos - Adventures in wiring, DCC/Sound
I just fixed the photo links on this blog. The GW loco wiring is really crazy so this thread is an important reference for anyone that wants to upgrade one to DCC.
I haven't worked much on the layout or the mine kit since retiring from the job a few weeks ago. Spring cleaning, family and honey-do's have had most of my attention. But I did make some interesting purchases.
Help with a DSX sound only decoder.
I have a Soundtraxx DSX decoder for a Pennsylvania K-4 that I am installing in the tender. This is a sound decoder only. I was under the impression that the auto-exhaust could be set with out using a cam. Can this be done or do I need to install a cam.
Sprog 2 or 3
Will a Sprog II have enough power to program a tsunami soundtraxx decoder like the kind that come with Athearn Genesis models? Should I get the Sprog 3 instead?
Thanks
Installation Digitrax Sound decoder SDN144AO
In Atlas GP40-2. Seems as though this is reasonably straight forward. Never tried this before. Should I give the job to a decoder installer [they are many miles from me] Thoughts? Thanks. Tom

CP's Area H Spur Update #2
It's been four months since my last update and in that time I've made decent progress on the Area H Spur. Most important was constructing the spur lead/staging track. As you'll notice in the photos, my aim was to use lightweight materials for the layout base. Simple steel brackets screwed into the walls and a coroplast (1/4" corrugated plastic sheet) serving as the base material.

Any pointers on replacing a Paragon 2 decoder?
As the title says.
I have a Broadway limited Y6b where the decoder malfunctions.
It loses connection with the DCC and has a strange short.
When measured, I got an open circuit from the tender pickups to both sides of the drive wheels simultaneously....
I was thinking of ripping it out and replace it with a Econami 200 steam decoder.
Anyone has a schematic to show where the wires from the loco plug goes?
And, is it possible to connect the smoke system to it?
Any tips are greatly appreciated!
Michael
