Scenery - Structures

Alcove Expansion - Back Left Corner Scenery - Log Cabin Chimney

Work continues at a snail's pace on the back left corner as I'm working on the two structures there.  I've just about finished the log cabin which is a kit from one of MRH's sponsors RsLaserKits.

This first picture is just to show the location of the cabin on the scenery area.  Note the house trailer under construction on the left.

Need ideas for a modern bridge for double-track on a curve

I need ideas for a bridge in this area - maybe 16" (120 scale feet) long. As usual, I can't spare much height for the deck - 1/2", maybe 5/8" which will leave me with 3" clearance to the rails below. The trouble will be dealing with the scale width - it will probably have to be almost 40 scale feet wide to meet the clearance needed on the curve. I live in Atlantic Canada where Tall Steel Viaducts are common but I don't think I can make this work with the double-track.

Company Houses

I recently completed several company houses and thought I would post a few pics. The structures are scratch-built using Evergreen sheet and strip styrene, Grandt Line windows and doors and Central Valley steps. The design is based upon a drawing that was in the C&O Historical Society magazine many years ago and observations I've made of company homes in West Virginia and Kentucky.

Alcove Expansion - Back Left Corner Scenery

While the artist I hired to paint the backdrop is doing her thing I wanted to continue to make progress so I decided to work on the scenery in the back left corner that is between the wall and the upper track.  I already had envisioned what I wanted the area to look like including a deep rock cut, some lush mountain area, a road, and a couple of homes.

Painting a Styrene Bridge

Working on the construction of a scratch built (styrene) dual track through truss bridge. Due to its length (52") I have incorporated the use of an aluminum box beam into the design. The alum box is the stuff you get at H-Depot for making house door screen frames, about 1/4" x 3/4", and white  (I believe its powder coated).

i have no experience w/ the alum stuff, as far as painting. What are your thoughts on type of paint (acrylic vs. enamel), should I primer? I plan on painting after full construction. Your thoughts will be helpful

Home Made Conifers Add Realistic Scenes

Hi Jack from Star, Idaho.  A while back in a post I said I had torn out a great deal of my railroad simply because I didn't like it.  Here are a few photos showing some of the rebuilt part and especially home made trees using furnace filter, dowels, and ideas from Joe's DVD's.  I plan to show a lot  more of my layout soon but this will give you an idea that I love the wooded regions of the Pacific Northwest.  So far I have built dozens of the furnace filter trees and I find it rewarding to create different looks in each and every

Alcove Expansion - Backdrop Part 1B - Artist Horizon

Update July 7, 2011 - Today the artist redefined the hill areas and adjusted the horizon accordingly.  She also started adding some of the trees on the mountains.  Here are a few pictures of her work.

This is a work in process and she said that she "paints a little here and a little there".  It's good to see some of the green!

HO scale modern cool storage loading dock

Hi all

I am looking for a modern cool storage loading dock (semi trailer one side and rail the other) for my layout. I have searched high and low to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas where I could either purchase one or procure the plans to build one???

Happy rails
