Locos - Rolling stock (general)
Low-cost rolling stock improvements
Most of us are familiar with Accurail products. (This post applies to all low-cost rolling stock manufacturers but I'm just using Accurail here as a 'generic' product identifier).
Bachmann 2-8-4 Berkshire modifications
As the title says I have a Bachmann Berkshire 2-8-4 that I want to convert to a 2-8-2 Heavy Mikado and I want to convert the coal tender to a Oil tender. This will be my Steam excursion power for my freelance passenger road based on an old Southern Pacific subsidy in central Texas.
I am sure this is not a new idea and I have done other conversions but this is my first steam project, Any ideas you may have for parts or diagrams would be greatly appreciated.

Preparing a wood craftsman boxcar for paint and decaling.
Good morning everyone
I am finishing up a Labelle boxcar kit, my first craftsmen rolling stock kit, and it occurred to me that I really don't know how to prep in for paint. If it were a plastic kit I'd wash it in soapy water to remove the oils and dry it and airbrush it but are their any special techniques for wood models?
Thank you in advance, what a wonderful resource it is to be able to come to this forum and be able to ask questions from those with more modeling experience!

Help wanted- paint matching
Reposting in this forum:
Looking for input /suggestions on the correct model paints (available in todays market, preferably Scalecoat) for a 1935 Hiawatha Atlantic and 5 passenger cars. All MILW fans know the orange and maroon/red changed over the years and from batch to batch, but the lack of color film in 1935 makes it darn near impossible to find a color picture of clean 1935 equipment as painted
Checking my expectations: inexpensive Bachmann locomotives stuttering and noisy out of the box?
I am fairly new to HO and recently ordered a couple relatively inexpensive Bachmann locomotives. I have a two other locomotives, both w/ DCC sound, and both run pretty smoothly. These two, however, have me wondering if they are bad eggs.
The first is the 2-8-0 Consolidation, DCC (no sound). I have to turn the throttle up a good bit before it lurches forward, and then while rolling at slow to moderate speeds it stutters badly repeatedly, at the same point in the rotation of the drivers. The motor also hums quite a bit before it starts moving.
A couple of videos from 2002 UP Challenger & Circus Train Runby
For my first blog entry, thought I would share two of my videos that I took on 8mm videotape back in 2002. Some of you have probably seen these on another forum.
Had this on 8mm video tape for years (obviously) from July 6, 2002. Recent messages here got me interested in digitizing it and here it is! And, yes, that is me taking pictures at trackside (still haven't digitized them, they are 35mm film). Taken in Mt. Prospect, IL (just north of OHare Airport.
Search for decal
I haven't been able to find a small white tilted HO scale leaf for my CNR wood caboose like this:
For some reason Microscale's is oversized and so is S. Arthur's.
For now I'm using this C-D-S dry transfer, which is the right size, but it doesn't have the leaf's veins, as seen above in the B&W photo. So for now, I'll only use it as a stand-in and won't seal it.
