My thoughts on building track using the "Fast Tracks" System

I will post my thoughts as a reply so you won't have to scroll through all the pics each time.

ATSF Paradigm Division - Staging Level Construction Update 2

I have now completed the wiring of Staging Yard "A" (10 tracks) on the near side of the peninsula.  It took about 35 hours over two weeks to complete the wiring job.  All 10 tracks can be turned on or off via the SPDT switches located in the recessed openings in the fascia and each track has an LED power-on indicator. The switches were recycled from my previous DC layout.

Weathering the Rails

Started weathering the Rails with the Rusty Pipe color acrylic paint. It's a bit tedious but looks good so far. May do one more coat.

In the pics I placed a piece of white paper in front to get a better idea of the color, as it tended to blend in with the base color in view.

Shelf Progress

Here's my latest update on progress and some better pics. I've finished the Barn wood color on the ties and wil move on to painting the rails next. The Barnwood acrylic color is made by Folk Art, and for the rail color I'm going to use their Rusted Pipe color. The Mississippi Mud I used for the base color is made by Americana.

Shelf construction

The shelf I'm using I purchased at lowes. Pics of it in my first post, will post better ones when I get a chance. It's about 4 feet long and 10" deep. I covered the top with a piece of Gator foam. I save the foam from packages of items we buy now and again, comes in handy. From my measurements I found my shelf was about an inch too narrow so I added another strip of foam to the back, to make up for it.

Introducing the Milan branch of the Iowa Interstate

After enjoying this site for over two years and learning a great deal from the many contributors, I have decided to start a blog to chronicle the construction of my prototype layout of the Iowa Interstate’s Milan branch. My hope is that by “going public” it will motivate me to keep progressing with the layout so that I actually have things to share. Nothing like a good dose of accountability to keep one from procrastinating, right?

Starting small

This is my first layout, so being that I don't have a large amount of space I'm starting small.
I figure this way I'll be realizing some accomplishment with my work sooner than trying to attempt a large layout.
I've decided to go with a shelf switchng layout, after searching for information on small layouts.
So here are some pics on what I've done so far.

ATSF Paradigm Division - Staging Level Construction Update 1

Latest update on the construction of the N-scale ATSF Paradigm Division (see my previous April 2014 blog item to see the track plans). UPDATED with new pictures and video on 17 April and 27 April.

The physical construction of the staging level, that is, supporting benchwork, roadbed (I use it even in staging yards) and track were completed on 16 December 2013.

ATSF Paradigm Division Track Plans

I thought that I had posted the track plans at one time but I guess that I had not since I could not find them on the blog. So here they are.

The overall size of the N-scale layout is 24' 11" x 15' 4".  Minimum aisle width is 36".  The layout is located in a dedicated outbuilding.

Light Soffit from Gatorfoam

I recently added 28 feet of soffit to my N Scale Mooers Junction Railroad. I constructed one 13 1/2 foot section ( weighing 22 lbs) with a truss assembly that lets me rest on my backdrop on one end and molding on the other. The other 15 foot section uses no framing and weighs less than 10 lbs. This also is constructed without attaching to the apartment walls.
