OP session #16 and a couple of guests.

Nothing new, I just realized how that i should have been making individual blog posts instead of just adding to one post.  So I just copied this post to a new blog post.

We held the session Saturday morning.  I had invited Joe Atkinson to come for a session on my layout.  Joe was able to make it down and op with us.  After a little bit of chit chat and explaining of the layout, we got to work.

Anyone in northern New Jersey first op session need 3 guys

Hello anyone out there want to be a part of my first operation session. I live in northern New Jersey my layout is a is mostly a switching layout. With some run through freights. The era is 1980-1983 based in the northeast kingdom of Vermont between St. Johnsbury vt, Newport VT, and morrisville VT I model the lamoille valley, CP rail , and Boston & Maine railroads as well as some early Guilford mixed power. Fair warning my basement is still some what messy but more then enough room to operate the railroad.

Magnetic Train Brake

The post about magnets used for greater traction got me thinking about a train brake using a magnet under a freight car to pull up a rod. I was surprised how well this worked as the test track held the car at about a 45 degree angle without letting go. Sliding the car away from the pin releases the "brake". I doubt that one car could hold a whole train but I'll add a couple cars and see how well it holds at a normal grade of 2%-3%.

Question on simple operations

In order to have a reason for the RR,I came up with a simple operating system.

The town is on one side of the room, the small 4 track yard on the other side.

I have 16 spots to spot a car.I took plane playing cards, and marked one card for each spot.I then draw 5/7 cards, pull cars from yard, go to town and switch out the industaries. Any car already there is ready to be moved, and brought back to yard.

Here is my issue, The yard is full, where do I go with the returning cars,so is to get them back in rotation.

Op session Jun 2019 - photos and commentary

See the blog post for lots of photos and commentary from the last operating session on the layout.  This was the 2nd in as many weeks, and we had a full 7-person crew.  It was also a test of some updated paperwork and scheduling.
