Paper Mill Kitbash: Done for now, and a diversion

My kitbash of the Walthers papermill (which in my world represents just the offices and outbound warehouse) is done and in place. The core of the connecting bridge to the main plant is built, and awaits cladding in siding-type textured styrene:

Recent Build Progress FSM JAcobs Fuel Co.

Have recently been working on FSM Jacobs fuel co again. It is an interesting old kit that can be had at a decent price and builds a demanding structure.

Still a long way off completion but wanted to share some recent progress shots.

Help with HO Scale EMD NW2 - probably BLI

All,  I have been given an assignment to detail and paint in HO scale the Domtar 1001, an EMD NW2.    This would be a late production NW2, so we have identified the probable candidate as BLI's NW2, which represents a phase V NW2.  The chief spotting feature of this phase was the tapered hood down toward the front cab windows.  The earlier instances had a stepped hood, like what the Kato NW2 shows.

Different Athearn Trucks

I just purchased an Athearn F-7A powered unit off of Ebay.  The trucks on this locomotive are different than the typical Athearn Trucks I have seen and am wondering if someone can tell me when the switch from what I have seen changed to these newer design?

What I'm used too:  All the Athearn loco trucks I have seen have square bronze bearings that are a part of the axle assembly.  These bearings fit into the steel frames of the trucks and are what transfers the power to the motor.

Rapido Royal Hudson jerky running at lowest speed setting

I’m finally giving my Rapido Royal Hudson a proper test run after replacing and glueing one of the rear driver traction tyres which came off for the second time. ????

Well that seems ok now (a thin smear of rubber cement) but I’ve noticed a distinct jerkiness in forward and reverse at speed level 1 (28 speed steps) on my NCE PowerCab controller. All the valve gear motion etc seems fine, it doesn’t seem to be binding anywhere.

Has anyone else come across this problem with a Rapido Hudson?

Working on wood shop.

I am working on a wood shop building and wanted Some equipment to put inside. Could not find any to buy, so I made my own. What do you think?

Weathering vs graffiti

OK, so I'm an old guy! I think any train on the mainline HAS to have a caboose. I like my stuff to look as close to prototype as possible so I weather everything from engines to rolling stock to structures and vehicles, even figures!

How do you feel about graffiti? Is that "weathering" or pure vandalism? You know how I feel. While it can be very creative I just hate seeing perfectly good things with all that often vulgar, stuff all over it.

Laser Cut Structure Bracing

I am planning on assembling my first laser cut structure. My question is, I was told to prevent any warpage of the structure that I should glue two horizontal wood strips on the backside walls of the structure. Is this a valued suggestion?

Shapeways smooth fine plastic detail removal

I believe have found the correct size Shapeways  reefer unit. The problem is the rear door latches and details need to be removed. I will use a decal from a photo to replace the details of the door. Can the printed 3d latch details be removed easily, like box car details?

Canadian Army Train -WIP

Work on the Intermodal Yard on my Trenton Subdivision in N Scale has stalled, while I wait for delivery of some items needed to finish. So great opportunity to forge ahead with a Canadian Army train I have been working on. The tracked vehicles are from Roco.cc and the wheeled vehicles are from Shapeways. I will be creating my own decals for these vehicles as none are available for Canadian armour in 1:160 scale
