Less than 3 weeks left - Crowd funding the production of model railroad products - HO box and auto cars

I don't think I've seen anyone try to use crowdfunding to raise the capital needed to bring a model railroad product to market, but here is an example.

Prototype Junction. a new company, is raising funds to tool an assortment of HO scale Pratt-truss single-sheathed box and auto cars. These plastic cars would be available RTR and as kits. Parts would be made available also.

Here's the link if you want to learn more about what they are doing and why:

Steel sheathed grain elevator

I am in the process of assembling a Cornerstone Steel Sheathed Grain Elevator. The difficulty that I am having is deciding the color to paint the structure for the location and time era that I am modeling. The time era ra is the late 1950’s and the location is the Midwest (Indiana). I have read where some owners left it the natural sheet metal color, whereas other would paint their structures (red, white, beige). I would like to hear various opinions as to what color would be the most prototypical for the time era and location that I am modeling.

IAIS's West End - Abandoned concrete plant - DONE

One of my hobby goals for 2020 is to make more progress on structures, and I decided to start by trying to fill the largest gaps between existing structures today.  Job #1 is the abandoned Ready Mixed concrete plant (later found to be Wilson Concrete, but in 2001 this plant was acquired by Lyman-Richey Corp., parent company of...Ready Mixed!) just east of UP's Pool Yard in Council Bluffs.  Here are a couple prototype photos from September 2001 and June 2005, respectively:

Ground lights and step lights. (Renamed!)

Even though my workbench is currently the dining table in the motorhome work continues.

I’ve been busy making working ground lights and step lights.  The current approaches to these lights up until now may well be vastly improved by using these ready to install or basic kit fixtures.

Who builds Resin Kits?

Who builds resin kits? I have long thought that only ultra serious prototype modelers build resin kits. While I am a prototype modeler I am not what I would refer to as ultra serious and as such I do not build resin rolling stock kits. The problem is that I see the availability of injection molded plastic kits slowly drying up with only expensive RTR models available. While were are not there yet, IMO we are well along the road heading in that direction.

The $4 Boxcar

Recently I read, on a number of sites, new people to the hobby that are dismayed at the cost or freight cars and such. They where asking for advice on getting started in the hobby without spending a lot of money.

Back in November a friend took me to Caboose Stop Hobbies in Cedar Falls, IA. It is one of those hobby shops that you can spend hours pouring over the stock as they have both new ad used equipment. Something we all wish we had in our town.

Fading Non-Boxcar Red Freight Cars.

Immodestly I think I am getting pretty good at weathering standard boxcar colors using powders and Pan Pastels.  But the era I model, around 2000, has more colorful cars.  My experience trying to fade these out has been somewhere between bad to a disaster.  My latest attempt was a Chessie blue boxcar I tried to fade with white Pan Pastels, did not work out.  I have heard of spraying a thin layer of a lighter shade of the car color, but would that not also affect the lettering?  I have also read to do this with white or gray.  I have tired oils on several projec

1/29 Scale Pettibone Speed Swing

I used a HO scale Custom Finishing model as a baseline for upscaling to 1/29. It ended up as a decent model, but made me well aware of the problems of trying to upscale a model.

Anyone interested in a Custom Finishing Pettibone? ;)

The whole idea of building said model was to originally make a hy rail version that was operational. That quickly was thrown out, but I may revisit again in the future with another Pettibone as they always seem to work in pairs.

Pictures in next post.
