UV activated glues

Has anyone any experience with UV glue?  I think my dentist uses it to hold my crowns own so it should be strong enough.  I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Soldering Techniques - Surface Mount Componets

Literally stumbled across this YouTube video - not directly connected with model railroading but the techniques apply for anyone who would be doing any sort of soldering on a small scale.

Tutorial on static grass

Hi friends!

I bought myself a static grass applicator about a year ago and started out by making grass on my layout.
It was easy and fast, but the result was not very realistic. So... I tested, bought new grass and tested. Watched Youtube tutorials, read through forums and made new trials, until the result started to look good.

I made a short video tutorial communicating what I learned so far, so maybe if you´re thinking about start with static grass, this might be a short-cut to a better result from day one.

Weathering with Mike Confalone: Project 5-GT covered hopper

In the first of a three-part Backshop Clinic series, Miles Hale demonstrates classic techniques for casting and painting rock, including instructions for making your own latex moulds.  In part one he discusses commercial molds and pouring plaster. - See more at: http://trainmasters.tv/videos/2016-01-1#sthash.XKbh741W.dpuf

ThingMaker: A really cheap 3D printer

OK - 3D printers are getting REALLY cheap. I don't see any performance specs here. They are advertising a "toy" so it isn't important to Mattel.

Anybody know more about these?

Bead Blasting Brass

There have been a number of posts about cleaning brass for painting.  This caboose looks terrible with bad tarnish and gunk and I got it for a song on eBay.  The area that is clean is the result of 2 minutes of bead blasting.  Note the nice etch it produces to help the paint adhere.  One caution though.  Once complete, you need to seal the surface with something as all that nicely etched brass will start tarnishing right away as there is nothing between it and the air.

Weathering MEC 31562

In between laying cork, building benchwork, and fiddling with turnouts, I have begun to weather this Maine Central boxcar that has been sitting on my workbench for a while now.

Removing acrylic paint

I found out by accident (yes, it was really an accident :-) how acrylic paint (i.e. weathering) can be removed:

  1. glass fiber eraser
  2. isopropyl alcohol
  3. methylated spirit
  4. mouthwash
  5. methylated spirit, mouthwash, water

Invisible Blogs

Just curious as to why some Blogs don't show up in either the "Blogs" list or "Recent blog posts" but are visible in "Recent posts by type".  Some classic examples are:

Georgetown & Allen Mountain Railroad

Cornhill & Atherton

Scratch Building the Great Western
