How to Plant an N-scale Vineyard

Posted this on my Free-moN "Shoo-fly in Sonoma" thread, but thought it's own thread might be better for sharing, search, and archival purposes.

I've been building & planting a vineyard, using small stranded wire, ceramic stucco paste, polyfiber and AMSI ground foam:

Proper Magnification

Recently I installed a new work desk, and found I needed a new magnifier for it. So I went about shopping on the internet for a magnifying lamp of sorts. I used to have one on my workbench where I used to be employed, and it worked very well for surface mount soldering, but I didn’t know much about it, other than what it looked like. So I set out shopping.

Wet Water

I have seen many, Many, MANY references to "Wet Water". Wet water is simply tap water (the purists among us will insist on distilled water) with a little detergent added to break the surface tension so the water will have better wetting action.

In almost every description I've seen we are told to use dish detergent! Don't do it! Dish detergent is specially formulated with foaming agents that make >lots< of suds (because it looks pretty in the sink?).

Home made Rail Bender - V1.0

Kevin said he was going to pick my brain about the rail bender I made. I figured I better do something quick before my brain has been picked bare.

Here's what Kevin was talking about. In my thread on the quarry tram line I wanted to see what a 10" radius looked like and whether a quarry car idea I had would work on a 10" radius curve. So I did a test track using my home made rail bender.

Micro-Fastener Index Toolbox

So I sat down to a long project of putting together a box containing five spectrum steam locomotives, each a different make.  It was a wonderful Ebay find, the price was GREAT.  As i try to find screws, I'm discovering some are just out of stock to the point that I can't get anymore.

I was up at Roy's Trains and he has the micro fastener index sitting there and I realize it would be wonderful to have something like that on my bench...and that thought has since evolved into this project!

City of Industry Layout

CITY OF INDUSTRY LAYOUT Project 02-12

Here is my second project, and it is a departure from my previous plan to begin design on the MP/TP operations in New Orleans, namely the Race St. Yard, and Annunciation St. Passenger Terminal, with some of the surrounding industry which the railroad served, i am still in the very rough planning stage for it still gathering information and maps and photographs of the area for the time period during the war and just afterward, pre-NOUPT era.

How to Scratch a Shed - Plank by Plank

I posted this on the construction thread for my Free-moN Effett Staging Yard, but thought it might be found easier in it's own thread, as well as provide a better place for people to share their own methods for plank-by-plank scratchbuilding.

Anyway, I finally finished some videos showing how I scratchbuild simple wooden structures like this:

How to attach details...

I have items like fences, road barriers and the like to add to my cork or foam base on my HO layout. My question is simple:

How do you attach them. For trees and telephone poles I drill a very small hole and glue a straight pin. Just the tip of the pin which is very hard to cut by the way. This actually works well. The straight pin allows me to move the object around until I find the most pleasing position.

So what do I you do. Something similar? Is there an easier way?

Photo studio lighting

I finally got around to setting up some proper photo studio lights. Rather than building a separate photo booth, I decided to mount the lights on my workbench, tapping into the power that's already run for the main light.
