Lift-outs, Duck-unders and Space Paranoia

When you only have 8x11 available for your railroad, its interesting how ones mind starts to work. There is a temptation to squeeze in as much as possible but I think that’s a mistake. I want an illusion of some open spaces and places “over the horizon”.

For example:

As part of top deck installation I needed a lift out section for the door. Here is a picture of the just constructed, bracket/support “thingy”. It basically links the Helix exit with the lift out section.

MRH - Education, Encouragement, or Entertainment?

MRH - Education. Encouragement, or Entertainment?  So I was wondering about the readers / members on MRH what is the main reason you follow and read MRH (both the eZine and threads).

Is it education? -  It's a great place to learn how to improve you modeling skills and other things.

Is it encouragement? - Need a shot in the arm to get going? It's a great place to see what others are doing and get jazzed up to work on your railroad.

Scale Model Animation 2 – LEDs and Lighting

Model animation—bringing models to life—adds enormously to the interest and enjoyment of any layout or individual model! In this installment I want to touch on more “points” on lighting and LEDs—likely more than you’ll ever want to know!

Returning to the Hobby

I am getting back into the hobby after many years absence. I have been modeling since my first Lionel 027 set that I got in 1954. My son and I got involved in a train club in Ottawa, Ont. when we moved here in 1989 and travelled with the club's modular layout to train shows in Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston, Prescott, and Syracuse for several years. Then the boy discovered girls and model trains went the way of the Dodo.

Now he has approached me to help him build a layout for his 3 boys. So I am back.

Introduction

Being as I am new here, in a sense, I thought I would take a minute to introduce myself. I have been receiving the Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine for nearly a year now, and it has been a great resource and motivation to me. Interestingly, in the past year, my model railroad has seen more productivity than ever before. I have made a lot of progress on my layout, and I have both started and finished numerous projects. I cannot say it is entirely related to an MRH subscription, but that is no doubt a part of the motivation! Of course, having an organized train room helps too!

Western Pacific 8th Subdivision Layout Tour

Progress on the layout has slowed for the moment due to some ongoing projects like adding a basement bathroom and crew lounge.  Since I've received several requests for a walk-around tour kinda thing, I'm shamelessly cribbing from what Tom Johnson has done on his L&IN photo thread.  As I go, I'll explain how a few things operate, as well as some of the design decisions.

Nuke the Spam contest?

What about a "Nuke the Spam contest"? Maybe give away a free MRH T-shirt for the person that nukes the most spam postings on this site in one month? I know that it gives unfair advantage to retired persons and "armchair modelers" but it would be fun! I just nuked two more!

Cornhill & Atherton – Helix Top Deck Issues Solved

Atherton engine terminal will sit on top of the helix to offset the loss of space a helix can cause. This creates 2 issues:

A great gift idea for your modeler friends? - video!

I was just thinking ( a rare thing for me!) - what about making a video of someone's layout as a gift for that person? Ask that person's permission first and if they want the results "public" (Youtube) or "private" (maybe burn them a DVD). If you own a camera car that's the same scale you could shoot some cab view and mix it with passing shots and still pictures of scenery. I know I've seen a number of RR videos of layouts shot by others.

Just thinking.........
