Locomotive Teardown and Rebuild

Really interesting program takes you through a teardown of a Geep 9 and rebuilding it as a Genset.

Mainline Midtrain helpers : Emulating the prototype

Dear MRHers,

OK, here's one for the BrainsTrust.

I'm seeking at creating a layout scene which will feature mainline mid-train loco ops. As part of this, I'm looking for "typical" trains which make use of such distributed power systems. Grain and Coal come to mind, but are there others?
(visualise sitting at a grade crossing in your car, crossbucks flashing,
and watching a loco splicing 2x strings of autoracks or container-stackers roll past?)

FWIW, I'm focussing on BNSF and UP ops in the Grain states...

Correct Position of Brake Gear

I would like to get the position of Brake Gear correct on all my stock (HO)

I recently acquired an old Roundhouse Products kit (it came boxed but in the oldest design of Roundhouse box I have seen here in the UK Yellow and Black) of a 60' Bulkhead Flat Car 1312 Western Pacific with running # WP 1404

I already have a few Bulkhead Flats and examining how other modelers have assembled them what a difference of opinion I found and therefore would like to put them all right

I am looking for some info on.....................

.............oil columns and just how they got oil into the tender.  I was not very successful with a Google search.

I have a PSC Oil Column model and it has a spout and what looks like a bottomless bucket hanging directly under the spout.  It is way higher than any tender I have.  No way could oil drop down into the tender from that height.  Was there some sort of a big hose that attached to the bucket to get the oil in the tender?

Any info would be appreciated as I now need to build the fueling station for the engine facility.

MRH: International?

So now that we have a thread dedicated to German Railroads and we have Michaels' very nice work, it has occurred to me quite suddenly that MRH itself may be in for a question of the minds: Does MRH go International?

Such an issue was never really an issue of contention for the old paper volumes: they picked a demographic and targeted it, as their medium limited them to that market.

Drawing of UTLX Narrow Frame Tank car wanted

I'm looking for some scale drawings of a Narrow Gauge "UTLX narrow frame tank car". Anyone know where I might find such a thing? I am thinking about scratchbuilding one or several.

Thanks,

Determining correct measurments

I was reading a post on ken's blog where he cut up a toy car and modified it. http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/5798

In it, he mentions that these cars are typically out of proportion.  I compared a few I have to some better quality cars I have and sure enough the toy stuff is higher.  My question is, how do I find out what the height on a typical toy car should be, if i wanted to tackle something like this?

Let's talk snow-removal!

Looking at Winter Storm Q or whatever, that is about to hit me here in Iowa, literally about two hours away...I'm thinking of rail plows/blowers...I model the 50's in missouri in early summer, but having snow-removal equipment on a over-grown MOW siding, just waiting for it's chance at timely glory, sounds like a nice touch!

Two Tone Passenger Cars

I have 13 two tone Union Pacific marked cars, I can not seem to find any history on these cars. Sadly the previous owner cut off all the knuckles (?). Would like to classify these cars and place them in their correct lineage. What is two tone color scheme and why did they come about?
