DCC - Electrical

Programming Functions for Lights

I have an HO scale Proto 2000 BL-2 that I have installed a Digitrax DH163 decoder in.  The engine runs great, but I decided to try and install running lights.  The train has molded on running lights.  I trimmed them off, drilled them out and mounted LEDs in place.  I wired four 1.8mm red LED's in series with a 1K resister, and tested them by touching the ends of the wire to the track.  They all lit up correctly, and so I installed them in the loco.  One end connected to the blue wire, and the other end connected to the green wire.

Bowser #100475 Northern 4-8-4 All Metal locomotive kit

Hi guys,

I have a question for you.  I was looking at buying a Bachman 2-8-4 Berkshire with DCC for 999 South African Rands (about $87), but now also have the option of getting my hands on a Bowser #100475 All metal Northern 4-8-4 locomotive kit (incl. tender), but also including the #100485 Super Detail kit, for ZAR 1,200 (about $104).  I would definitely want to convert the loco to DCC&Sound, but not sure how to do that.

I am new to the hobby, and would therefore like your opinions/assistance on the following two questions:

Which track gets which wire on a wye?

Image from www.wiringfordcc.com

A previous post covered gap placement and reversers for a wye on my layout that has a similar config to the image below.

My question is: Does it matter what wire, red/black, goes to which rail in the wye tail below? I have gaps where shown and an auto-reverser to hook up. I think I can just pick a rail for the red and black and the AR will handle the reversing when needed.

Thanks.

Mass Failure of Keep Alive Modules - SOLVED

Background

I have 16 Soundtraxx equipped locomotives to which I have added TCS KA-1 Keep Alive modules.  I also have one TCS WOW Sound locomotive with a KA2.  All have worked great for six months on my Digitrax controlled layout, with 1 DCS100 and 2 DB150s controlling three power districts.  The controllers are all set to “N Scale” power.

12 V or 24 V coreless motor? Help please!

I want to remotor one of my O scale engines using a coreless motor. Coreless motors the size needed for an O scale engine are expensive (at least here in Germany). A suitable 12 V coreless motor is about 125 EUR (OUCH). Now I saw the same motor, only as 24 V version for 75 EUR. Being no expert when it comes to these electrical matters I wonder if it would make any difference or is the 24 V motor not going to work properly? I am running with DCC, so adjusting the start voltage would be no problem if necessary.

setting up engine driver app?

Does anyone have experience setting up the engine driver app to use a phone as a throttle?

wiring a wye ( again )

Working on my friend layout and trying to figure how to wire a section of a wye for long trains with metal wheels.  The tail track actually leads to another section of the layout.  I am thinking that If I  double isolate the tail track switch ( hand laid fasttracks) at the diverging routes and make a long enough section down the tail track to handle any length train that will be enough. , but my confusion is on how to flip the frog?  we are using tortosie machines.  Do I just hook up the bus wires to that section of track as well?

Layout Update #5A

The section of the layout that is in the video is where the double track mainline goes in/out of the west helix, the branch line goes in a loop above the west helix, and the town of Michaelson is against two walls.  The depth of this section is 30 inches and so I found that it would be easier to remove each module and work on them when I was sitting down as opposed to stretching over them after they are screwed down in place on their support structure.

battery switch for digitrax throttles

Has anyone installed a micro switch in a digitrax throttle to extend battery life?
