Building a home for a GE 85 Ton Locomotive: Wiring and switches complete

The temperature outside has been a daytime high of -25 for the last 30 days, so I have been inside spending a fair bit of time working on my layout.

Pit up view

Sound Decoder Question

I decided to venture into DCC this year. I just purchased the Bachman EZ Command controller, and a Bachmann Spectrum 462 loco to accompany it.

I figured everything out so far on basic operation except for the sound. The paperwork that came with the Engine and with the Controller is so vague, I'm not sure if I even have sound with this loco. The coal tender has what looks to be a speaker on the bottom, and wire connections to the loco, but I can't get any sound to work. Any help would be much appreciated.

Surroundtraxx Response to Dave B

I have had my Surroundtraxx operational for some time now. Being an N Scaler, I am pleased and excited with the addition to my layout. Not everyone flavors sound but I do. It adds to the depth of operating and for me, adds to the realism of running my trains. It provides each locomotive with its own character.

Kato N scale Mikado

I have just purchased a used N scale Kato Mikado but the box is missing the parts sheet. I am about to install a decoder and would like to see the exploded view. It appears that Kato does not put them on line.   If anyone could provide me with a copy, I would be grateful.

DCC operation

Thanks for viewing my post hopefully this wont be severely repetitious for you. I haven't  been model railroading for probably 20 years, things have changed since then and it seems for the better.  DCC is great I just need to verify a few things.

1. It seems that the old block control is out the window am I to understand that single wire both poles are all that is needed?  if not why?

2. Is it possible to connect any train engine to DCC with a decoder?  Is there generic decoders or are they proprietary?

Feeling Proud

I did my first decoder installation tonight.

I put a DH123D into at least a 20+ year old Athern SD 40-2 and when I was all done it ran. Some time ago I spent several days tuning up the engine for good operation on DC and tonight I decided to take the plunge.

App Control. The future of model railroad control?

App Control has arrived in the toy market.  A recent "Brookstone" catalog features a "AR.Drone 2.0 Quadricopter" camera drone that has 36 minutes of flight time and features a HD camera.  For $370 (batteries and charger included) this is a lot of technology.  For over-the-top technology, add a "AR.Drone Flight Recorder GPS" (861937) for automated flight control and video recording.

Looking for a recommendation for sound decoder

I want to put sound in a Bachmman Spectrum 2-8-0. I got the loco for a good price and I have put a Spectrum Vanderbilt Medium tender on it as shown:

Kato Unitrack and MTH locos

I recently purchased a MTH HO locomotive and couldn't get it to work with either my DCC controller or a MTH DCS Commander.  I could get it to run around the track, but no sound, no smoke.  So right now it's back with the retailer for testing.
