Alcove Expansion - Turnout control installation

This post may seem basic by many modeler, but I wanted to share the process I have for installing my fascia mounted turnout control panels.  This is just one of may methods that could be used and I use this method because 1.) I don't know any better; and 2.) It works.

Digital switch control without DCC

Colleagues,

For my layout (swiss style), I'm looking for a system allowing to control all swiches, signals, etc, by PC. I know that it's possible by using any digital system (DCC or similar), but I don't want to install DCC on my layout, as:

- The central units are very expensive

- I have a very extensive engine collection, and I would not like to have to install a decoder in about 450 engines

No sound until Locomotive moves (Loksound 3.0 installed)

I have Loksound 3.0 installed in my Locomotive, for some reason now the sound does not come on until I hit the first speed. I have JMRI. Could someone tell me what to change please.

Thanks

Working bells animations and SMD lighting

G'Day,

here is a link to my YouTube video showing 3 x Blackstone C-19 locos each with animations and lighting using SMD LEDs -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bPU5Sjr_EY

2 x locos have working bells and the 3rd loco has a fireman shoveling coal.

All 3 have a 2nd decoder and tiny mocro motors driving the animations.

Old school Diesel meets new electronics

I have two Diesels that I have had since I was a Kid, and have had them stored until now, I have 3 grandsons and want to get them involved in trains as our area does no longer have a train.. here is my question .. I have a shark nosed model power 723 a powered CN, and a Bachmann emd F9 Diesel CP Rail. I was wondering if it was possible to fit them both with DCC with sound.. or are they too old for an upgrade.

Reversing section help

Can someone please clear up the confusion I have regarding length of a reversing section? Some have said it should be at least as long as the longest train. Others have said it only has to be as long as the length of locos/cars with power pickup. Does it have to be the full length of the train if metal wheels are used on all the cars? Getting ready to design and lay the track in this section. Thanks.

Shhhh.. Making an old decoder quieter?

I put an older SoundTraxx decoder into a cheap Bachmann F7 recently.  Aside from running backwards (%^&$#! Bachmann wiring practices....) it runs fine.  It is, however, a bit on the noisy side.  I've been told by another modeler who has a number of these that his are all nice and quiet, and on reflection it seems that the noise is coming from the PWM motor drive.

Athern / Digitrax decoder installation problem

Hello all,

I have been having problems with with a Digitrax decoder in an older Athern HO SW-9.

The decoder I installed was a DH123D rated for 1.5 amps with a maximum of 2 amps short term.
