Benchwork - Roadbed

Joints Between Splines

I've been reading articles and posts regarding spline construction, but I don't recall this being discussed:  what method is used to join the ends of the splines, specifically, the first spline that is defining the route.  I assume that rigid joints aren't required on the successive splines as they are merely glued to the adjacent spline.  It's that first spline that has me stumped.

Foaming at the Mouth - Benchwork for the Center Peninsula

The final benchwork for the New Great Western Railway involves adding the upper level to the center peninsula. The helix providing access to the upper level was built as part of the lower level benchwork last year and is complete.  The Welty Branch benchwork was also done last year to test the upper level height and provide temporary storage for odds and ends.

The design and construction of the base of the center peninsula was an evolutionary process. I knew what I wanted to accomplish and it just sort of happened.

The Start of Infinty loop

After months of putting it off, drawing 10 different designs I've officially started to piece together my dream layout, a modular layout around 16' by 24' ft.  much bigger then any room in my house so I'm building it as universal as possible so I can create small sections and still run a full circle.  Its being designed as a two track main line transporting coal, oil, and container services.  It's completely from scratch although some components and concepts are coming off of Google earth, in which I've found random yards to base staging off of.&nbs

Alcove Expansion - Fascia Installation

After some careful consideration the cold hard truth hit me that I'm not going to be able to complete the alcove area before my October 15th open house on the Piedmont Pilgrimage.  Accepting this fact I decided to change focus to try and install what I though would be pleasing for my visitors.  Since I believe that fascia and a fascia curtain help define the area and give it a more finished look I'm going to concentrate on getting those items installed.  I believe that I won't have any problem getting this task completed.  Here are some pictures of the pro

Summer Shunting Shelf Project

My nine-year-old daughter & I are building an N-scale shelf switching layout for the summer. Even though layout design is one of my trades, my daughter brushed aside my ideas & jumped on Byron Henderson’s “Alameda Belt Line”: a 1’ x 6’ shelf designed to fold in half for portability.

Backdrops & A Golden Spike - A Big Weekend on the 8th Sub

A lot happened on my Western Pacific 8th Subdivision this weekend.

The mainline was completed, although there's still some wiring to do before all of it can be operated.  I've wondered if it's truly appropriate to celebrate the "golden spike" if the track is installed with acrylic/latex sealant?  Not sure what to call it...

Make 200 ft $170.00 of Beveled Scale Homasote Roadbed from 1- $26.00 4X8 sheet of Homasote

Ten years ago I found this following web site that explains how to cut and make your own Homasote roadbed.

The main tool required is a Table saw and if you don't have access to one that's OK check out the web site anyway as there is tons of great information on Layout Construction by Craig Bisgeier and the Housatonic Railroad Company.

This is Not a site that sells product it just tells you how to build models and bench work as well as a great Model Railroad Craig has built.

IKEA Lighting

IKEA mini LED's came to my rescue! Since I did not have the money nor luxury of creating a higher ceiling and lights with valence without excessive cost and labor, I resorted to the next best thing. Taking an idea from pictures of a modular layout right here on this site, I searched for and and found some mini LED's that were both affordable ($15 on sale) and practical. With the normal lighting turned off, the new lights provide overall even lighting without glare and a very realistic look.
