Operations

wood pulp unloading

  1. How would pulp be shipped to a converting paper mill in the 1950's-1960's? I want to set up an unloading point to receive pulp. What would the product look like and how would it have been handled? I'm assuming it would arrive aboard boxcars or maybe even empty-return reefers.

BILL SCOBIE'S RGS: SWITCHING PLACERVILLE

Bill Scobie takes the lead locomotive while Pierre Lamontagne operates the helper on the freight from Ridgeway to Rico. The switching operations in Placerville are interesting as the two Sn3 steam locomotives operate both ends of the yard. Interesting moves were made to situate the lifts in the proper part of the train. There are facing and trailing moves for drop offs at industries and local moves as well. The long freight had to clear the main for passenger train traffic. Always a joy to see Bill's Sn3 Rio Grande Southern put through its paces.

JMRI OPERATIONS NEW MANIFEST CREATOR

The following manifest is from my layout for Train 100, a West to East Manifest Fright that runs across the layout and sets out and picks up cars from various Towns.  This is another great advancement in the JMRI Operations Program and will be a built in part of operations program with the down load in a very short period of time.  Dan & Dan are working on the final clean up and it will be available to all soon.  I will post a note when ready. Open to see manifest.

Preparing for operations on my room sized layout

I am going to begin operating on my NPBL room sized layout. This is going to be the teaser to get some interest. But more importantly to keep the informational only with the meat of the subject to follow.

The article in the January MRH by Lance Mindheim spurred me to get going having hemmed and hawed long enough.

Action at Falls Tower

After months and months and months of doing nothing...some train ran.  Check out the action at Falls Tower.

Falls Tower guards the junction between Penn Lake's Bourbon River and Mountain Subs, and the Delaware and Hudson's Penn Division. The Tower also controls operation into and out of the North Falls Industrial Track and R Nicholas Steel plant.

Wheel reports

Hello!

Anyone using wheel reports as operating your layout?

Using JMRI Operations - A worked example - Part 5

This is my last blog posting for this worked example of using JMRI Operations to create the switch lists for Lance Mindheim’s bakery switching layout.

Tips and Hints for Model Railroad Operations

Mike Hamer and I got together over the holidays and decided to put together a series of videos on how to efficiently operate a model railroad. In four parts, the show covers:

Part 1. What to look for when coming to a new railroad. Areas to pay attention to.
Part 2. How to switch, doing lifts and drops from a mainline train
Part 3. Understanding arrival at a major yard and locomotive moves
Part 4. Switching a yard and industrial area efficiently.
