Short Solo Session on the Shore Line
I'm discovering that there's nothing quite like the relaxation and pleasant diversion you get from just operating a local freight train. Lots of others got to this party before me, but - driven by the lack of formal op sessions - I've just recently arrived at this realization, having operated the outbound leg of the Airline Local just a few weeks ago.
Eagle Ford Job
Back in the summer of 1979 as a management trainee on the MP, I was assigned to ride the Eagle Ford Job, which served industries west of the Trinity River near Dallas, TX on the MP, former TP.
While rooting around in a box of old paper, I found the notes I took on that trip. Thought the group might be interested in a minute by minute account of a real switching job from 1979.
The job had engine MP 1210, an SW9 and originated at Browder Yard, west of Dallas.
As soon as I can find a ZTS map of the area, I will post that too.

A Solo Ops Session
If not having regular ops sessions is one of the lemons of life lately, then being able to operate your own layout is definitely the lemonade. After all the setup required for one of my typical sessions, it's all over in a bit over 3 hours during one evening. Reminds me of a holiday dinner: the eating only takes a small fraction of the prep and cooking.
Finger Flicking - Pros and Cons
There has been lots of discussions on "Finger Flicking" of turnouts as an Alternative to other methods.
Personally I dislike this method but I would like to get others opinions.
From my experience I have come up with a a list of Pros and Cons.
PROS
Cheap
Simple
Low Maintenace (no wiring etc)
Clean Fascia/No Control Panels
CONS
Unrealistic
Damage to Scenery/Details by clumsy people
Broken switch blades
Ops Session Setup
I've said before that it's ironic that layout owners seldom operate their own layouts, often playing host for operating sessions instead.
