Lessons learned from our latest layout setup

The Hill Country Outlaws 0n30 modular group participated in the New Braunfels Train Show this past weekend.  Overall, I think the show went quite well. The setup at this show consisted of our core display of an 8' x 24' loop with a wye at one corner. A 12' branch runs off the wye to a transfer table module and turntable.  The loop has a passing siding on each side to allow bi-directional running.

Semaphore Operation

Hey all, looking to operate my SP style dual semaphores. I've seen the tech out their by tam valley etc but my problem is, is that I have dual dc analog motors connected to operate my signals. Is their a simple diy cheap way of operating them while the block is occupied? I was thinking of an photo cell sensor so when its triggered at point A arm moves and does not go back until the next point is reached. Any ideas? Thanks!

TT & TO help for the Ruphe and Tumbelle

I'm currently expanding the R&T and am looking to get back to ops again. We (about three or four of us) have been running With a Time Table but without any Train Orders, or dispatcher. Being a small narrow gauge layout with few trains being run the job of a dispatcher would be a bit boring, so we have worked without one. This works well if everybody is on time, but, of course, that usually isn't the case!

My question is this:

Grain operations on a modern regional

The topic of grain operations on modern regional railroads recently came up on the Yahoo Proto-Layouts list.  I thought I'd post my reply here as well in case the information I compiled is helpful to others.  My information was gathered with regard to the Iowa Interstate, but the principles should apply elsewhere.

Anyone using webcams in the train room?

After recommending that Rob in Texas consider adding a webcam to the club I began to think about doing the same. There are a lot of inexpensive video monitors that are either usb or wireless connected but few talk about compatibility with apps like Skype.

Is anyone using a webcam to share or monitor the layout?

Does the pan & tilt feature work as advertised?

What would you chose to allow an interactive experience as Skype provides?

Thanks!

Neil

eliminating the car reserves in JMRI

I would like to eliminate the reserves that are listed at various locations.  I can not get certain trains to move cars because the reserve for that spur has a large number listed in the reserve column.

I tried resetting the car moves to zero with no success.  I reviewed the JMRI Operations manual.  I tried going on the Yahoo users group but that was an exercise in frustration.

There must be a simple solution but it eludes me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated....Ken

Coatesville

Coatesville is a major city at about the midpoint on my layout, home of Lukens Steel Co.

BQR Control Panel Update

As with everything on a model railroad layout, after I thought I was finished I had an inspriation as to how to connect a second RRampMeter to the other booster. And had been working on the train elevator and came up with a way to integrate its control with the panel.

Mascoutin Valley Railroad - Barnaby Mine Operations

Hey everybody!  We are running trains on the Mascoutin Valley Railroad.  Check out this video on how we explain the operations at the Barnaby Mine!  I'd love to hear what your thoughts are on the operation!  Thanks for watching!

As a note the mine is only 60% done in terms of trackage but its a start.

Until next time keep 'er in Notch 8!!!

Station arrangements

On another forum, a question came up on what the typical track arrangements were at a midwestern town.
