SPSF Meadow Sub: Kodachrome GP35 Custom Paint Project

This blog details the custom building, detailing, painting, and weathering of a Kato GP35 for my fantasy SPSF model railroad.

The Office Park zone gets lit up, and the crew gets busy with some operating sessions

I got inspired after reading a number of recent posts on LED layout lighting.  I spent several hours overcoming information overload on Amazon and eventually settled on a strip of 5000K SMD5050 LEDs.  Saturday morning the postman delivered the goodies and I got to work.

Expanded car routing project description

Thank you to everyone that contributed to my little survey regarding the university project that I am pursuing. I have expanded my ideas as a result of the responses. I am still a long way from finalising the proposal and some 40 weeks away from having to complete a 10,000 word report on the project so there is some way to go to get this really sorted out before I start.

Any way, the blog entries are in two parts.

Part 1

Interesting switching idea

I was watching a video of a Marquette Rail train, and at one point they had to stop at an industry and shuffle around some tank cars without setting anything out or making any pickups. If you wanted to add interest without adding rolling stock to trains this would be a good way to do it.

How to rationalize my boxcar fleet.

I'm in the process of building a proto-freelance switching layout in HO that is based on a very active industrial ally that is in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Having arrived to the point where I can start creating my operations plan, I have decided that I want to be as prototypical as I can be about sending the correct type of boxcar to a particular customer. i.e. an insulated car with plug doors would make sense to be going to a cold storage warehouse or food producer.

Virtual Mainline on the N&W Pocahontas District

One of the disadvantages of building an HO multi-deck layout in a smaller space is that you end up with a lot of attendant support track. On my 14' x 20' layout I have a staging yard that spans the long side of the layout and 4 separate helices.

When I'm operating solo and switching in the yard, this support track works to my favor because it dramatically increases the length of the mainline continuous loop. If I put a train on the mainline and let it circle at prototype speeds, it passes by only once every 15 to 20 minutes of actual time.

Ops in a Granite Quarry?

Hi,

Context: My main interest in the hobby is... actually doing videos of model trains. Run-bys are always cool but I like participating in operating sessions and now I'd like to start doing some videos of ops that pretend to be at least not totally unrealistic. Unfortunately that desire is largely dampened by my lack of knowledge of prototype operations.

SPSF Meadow Sub: Custom Fast Clock Alternative Using Computer and Monitors

When I converted my DCC system from Digitrax to NCE in September, I decided to completely do away with the LocoNet system, which included my Logic Rail LocoNet fast clock.  I don't have any signals or anything else connected to LocoNet, so that was an easy decision.  My idea for the fast clock replacement was to use something else that wasn't dependent on or linked to my DCC system.  At first, I was planning to use the JMRI fast clock on my computer and eventually purchase the Iowa Scaled Engineering fast clocks.

An operations-oriented model railway in the year 1899

I found reference to this article somewhere online, I forget where. It's interesting to see the state of model railroading that far back. The trains are O gauge and the locos are clockwork.

I'll post a link to the complete PDF file, if I can find it ...

Preparation for Operations on the ATSF Paradigm Division - Part 2

This is part 2 of Preliminary Operations Planning for the ATSF Paradigm Division. This part shows the results of re-positioning trains to match the schedule sequence for 00:01- 06:00 AM. The biggest change has been to change where trains reside in the lower staging yard based upon their location (north, east or west).  This sequence was chosen since it has the most trains run in a 6-hour period/trick.
