DC - Electrical
Simple tip for keeping wires straight.
This should have been a duh, no brainer, but I didn't think of it until my second pass at running wires under the layout. I color coded each end this time. Made hooking it up much easier. I bought a package of electrical tape in five colors. Tape the same color at each end when running the wire and you don't have to keep running back and forth trying to keep which wire is which. The color also goes into the documentation of how I wired this thing for later trouble shooting.

Michael Rose does his LED strips - a video
On my recent visit to Michael Rose's wonderful layout he was nice enough to do a "How to" video on his LED lighting strips that he assembles and uses to light his layout. (And yes, I did get some yummy cake and coffee - more on that in a later post!)
Specific help with MTH HO loco - DCC Ready
I have a question regarding MTH DCC Ready locomotives. I have just tried 4 locos recently purchased. Two have one polarity and the other two are opposite. I've searched the web and found polarity switches for large-scale, but these locos are HO scale. Anyone have some suggestions? Has anyone seen this problem? I am running DC and would like to be able to run more than one loco at a time.
Thanks in advance,

Laser Occupancy Detection
There was a recent discussion of occupancy detection methods on MRH (see: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/20240 ).
I would like to add another option that involves using a small laser and phototranistor to detect when a train is occupying a section of track. I use this method rather successfully on my HO module. A laser detects when a train is on the main line so that another train that runs only on my module doesn't cross the main track at an inopportune time!
Crest HO Train Engineer Radio Control System
Good day -
In 2007 I began working with Aristo Craft to help with the design of a new large scale radio control system. This came to be called the Train Engineer Revolution and has been adopted by large scale hobbyists throughout the world. The system was designed to take advantage of 2.4 GHz frequencies for interference rejection, range and reliability.
Condo/Loft Layout: Culvert scene and Train Operation
My ongoing blog about building a small 6' x 1' 1/2 switching layout and a 4' 1/2 staging/Interchange in a Condo in Toronto.
As we approach the Holidays and we expect guests, I want to get going on the scenery and building construction. However, the layout is light and small enough (6' x 1' 1/2) that I can pull it off the shelving support and store in the closet in lieu of my progress.

Here is a photoshopped demo of the Culvert/Pond scene i've been working on:

Source-DC Negative ION Generator for Static Grass Applicator
FYI
I am not sure if this has been mentioned somewhere already or maybe everyone has moved on from the static grass applicator? In case anyone is still interested in DIY "Grass Blasters", I see that Oatley Electronics is offering a new model of DC negative ION generator on Ebay.

Scale Model Animation 14: Grade (or Level) Crossing Control
Model animation—bringing models to life—adds enormously to the interest and enjoyment of any layout or individual model! This edition covers one element for animating grade crossings—triggering and control using infrared detectors, servo motors, LEDs, and an Arduino Pro Mini for timing and control.
