Tools, tips and tricks

Wiring locomotive lighting to a DCC decoder.

I finally got a moment to work on one of my own projects!  I have a SD70ACe by Athearn in VTR colors that I have wanted to upgrade.  I took some pictures along the way to show you how I organize a fairly simple wiring package. The headlights and ditch lights on this model were all LED, present and working.  I wanted to add working number boards but starting with a solid block of styrene was not in the cards.  My consolation was that I could add ground lights, step lights and a cab light.

How Many Tools Can You Count?

I'm installing switches, track and ground throws in Angela's Landing.  I keep getting out more tools.  It's amazing how many we accumulate.  How many can you count in the photo below?

HOn3 Loco Test Stand Anyone?

Does anyone produce an HOn3 test stand?  You know - the roller-based system to break-in a new or rebuilt locomotive?  Anyone have a design for one?

I need the best, least risky way of removing lettering from a specific Atlas GP38 (2016 version)

Over the years I have tried a variety of techniques to remove lettering from pad printed painted models with modest success. I've tried Solvaset with tissue paper and erasers as well as other commercially available decal removers.  I've usually taken a significant amount of the underlying paint with the lettering.  Touch-up painting and then weathering to disguise that damage has been required.  It is one thing to do it on a $20 car and quite another for something expensive and hard to come by.

Questions re: using Elmer's or Aileen's glue to mask for painting

I need to mask some painted areas with very little surface for tape to adhere to so I considered using Microscale Micro Mask.  Then I read in this and other forums that MMM doesn't work well with acrylic paint.

Finished Intermodal Cranes

Just finished the MiJack Translift and Container Gantry Cranes for my CN Intermodal Yard on my layout -Trenton Subdivision in N Scale. The two crane models fit nicely in the scene and don’t overshadow the surrounding scenery. I opted for two different styles of cranes for added variety.

Assembling an Athearn All-Weather Window

Is there a trick to assembling the Athearn all-weather windows?  It looks easy enough, just two pieces - the housing and clear plastic for the windows.  How hard can that be?  But for the life of me I can't get the clear plastic to fit inside of the housing, and just end up shattering it while trying for a press-fit.  Multiple times.  I've got to be missing something obvious.

Traffic lines and marking complete. WIP Update

It has taken quite a few hours of measuring, marking, masking, painting and (of course) touch ups. As you can see from the “Google Earth” view. The trailer parking and container storage areas have been lined and numbered. I have not placed the CN Intermodal Yard into my Trenton Subdivision in N Scale. By having the flexibility of being able to move the scene I can work easily on all areas.
