HOn3

I am doing a logging layout set in the Teens and 20's era when things were just beginning to modernize, No particular place. I already have some expensive HO Locos. I also want to use some HOn3 for things like side tracks into the mountains, Mills etc, but I do not want to "break the bank" so to speak to get an HOn3 loco or two. How do i convert an HO loco to HOn3 I know there is a way.

Setting Up JMRI and and using the Bachrus MTS-DCC to speed match locomotives

After doing the podcast on A Modelers Life JMRI month I got a few questions on setting JMRI and speed matching my locomotive. So i did a video on setting up JMRI DecoderPro and Using the Bachrus MTS-DCC to speed match my locomotive. I use Excel for the grafting. I hope this is helpful for those of you trying to get this set up.

I am setting the follow standers for my locomotive:

Yard switchers top speed 35 mph

Freight Loco top speed 55mph

Passenger Loco top speed 65mph

Mounting NWSL repower motor into Mantua 4-6-2

I am repowering a Mantua 4-6-2 (solid boiler) with NWSL kit and motor.  Its not clear in the instructions (link below) how & where the motor is to be mounted.  The new motor and old motor frame are pictured in the attached photo.  It seems like the motor might be glued to the inner top of the frame with the motor axle & worm gear coming in at an angle to the gear on the drive axle.  The instructions indicate keeping the motor axle "parallel" but I do not see how that could be, not without creating a new base for the motor to sit on.  I cou

Rivarossi 0-8-0 with RP25 flanges

I have an opportunity to buy a Rivarossi 0-8-0. It is a later production as it has RP25 flanges. What other improvements (if any) did they make to the locomotive? I am wondering about the motor especially. Hoping they ditched the old 3 pole one.

3D printing help

Looking for contacts for this very special project.  To explain the project:

My Dad has a old Lionel HO (yes HO) steam engine.  Back when I was a teenager, the engine was not functional, and I took it apart and found out why - a plastic gear on the main drive axle was cracked, and instead of driving the main axle, would just spin in place.  The gear was removed and we attempted to find a replacement with no success.  The engine is still fine, but the gear has gone missing over the years.

Any 3D Designers with Printer Out There for N-Scale

I  am having a hard time getting anyone to respond to my queries about building something in 3D for me. I have tried several times to contact people who sell thru Shapeways without any luck.  I never get a response. So I am looking for some help.

Because N-scale does not have a DCC ready Santa Fe style 4-8-4, I am in the process of merging the guts of a Con-Cor DCC ready 4-8-4 GS4 with the shell of a Bachmann 4-8-4 Northern.

An assessment of the Kato P42 engine

Normally a multiple sample set of tests is required before any statement can be made with certainty.
However, recently a Kato P42 Amtrak engine with the motors in the trucks was made available for
testing.

The results of this engine's initial tests were such that a summary of this single test was justified.

While looking at individual parameters the uniqueness may not stand out, when looking at the
performance overall the unit is in a class by itself.

detailing MDC/ Roundhouse 0-6-0

Back in the early 1960's, there was an article in Model Trains magazine (HO Railroading Made Easy) on detailing the Roundhouse 0-6-0.

Anyone have this article or know the issue date? It's the only article I could find on detailing this particular engine.

Engine Weight impact on Draw bar force

Over the last several months, I have been testing a number of HO engines for various performance features.  These tests have been all DC.  The same section of level track has been used of all of this data.  The section is cleaned daily.
