Steam locos

Equipment for the Coal Branch (1910-1940 coall short line in Alberta, Canadian National)

John Kennedy:,

I am dreaming of building a shelf layout (perhaps three scenes or towns) for a short line which hauled coal from mines in the foothills of ghe Alberta Rockies to the Canadian National main line west of Edmonton. The time period would be roughly 1900-1940. Equipment was small: 4:4:0, 2:6:0 and small gondolas. I expect I would join the scenes with a helix at each end as the trains climb into and out of the mountains.

Running narrow gauge steam locos backwards - questions and thoughts please

Hi Folks,

I am planning my first layout using 2 foot wide modules, and need to understand issues with running narrow gauge engines backwards - specifically:

    Blackstone 2-8-0
    MDC 2-8-0
PFM 25 Ton 2 truck Benson

The layout I am hoping to build will be point to point with both SG & NG trackage crossing many trestles and bridges in a very mountainous environment.

N-scale Santa Fe Blue Goose Upgraded to DCC Sound

This short video shows my N-scale Con-Cor (~1986 vintage) Santa Fe Blue Goose (4-6-4) running with DCC sound during its final installation test before being shipped back to me.  I had the same professional installer (reasonably priced) that had converted a Walther’s DL109 for me last year.  This installation used a Digitrax SDN136PS which is also very reasonably priced. This is the same engine that can be seen in a couple of previous videos testing out my spline helix while running in DC prior to being converted to DCC.

3D Printers outside the U.S.

I wanted to ask for some information on 3D printing in countries outside of the U.S.  For the membership living outside the U.S., do 3D printers have searchable online catalogs like Shapeways has?  http://www.shapeways.com  Can you order items from their websites directly?

Is it possible to collect a number of links to these companies that have model railroad items?

How do you make a complex metal shape?

I am designing an HO scale 0-6-0, and I'm trying to figure out how to make a weight for it.  Small locomotives benefit from as much weight as possible, so making the weight fit every available bit of space is a priority.  To that end, I've drawn a weight which fits very neatly inside the planned model:

Water standpipes

Does anyone know where I can get HO standpipes for my yard? Nothing shows in Walthers and same goes for MRH search. Google gave me pictures and not much more. I would like to get 2 or 3 at a reasonable price. My yard will have an off site water tank to supply the standpipes. DM&IR in Two Harbors, MN for example. RR owned it but it sat next to a city street and was piped into the yards.

To fit diamond stacks or not fit diamond stacks, that is the question...

Hi everyone,

I have a bachmann spectrum 4-6-0 and 4-4-0 on my HO thoroughfare gap railroad which is set around 1900. I am thinking of fitting some diamond stacks to these locos as I do like the look of the balloon and diamond stacked locos.

My reasoning is that my railroad passes through a dense redwood forest and logging area and the diamonds would be used to arrest any sparks, even though these are coal fired locos I understand that some coal fired locos were and still are (in the case of the shays at cass) fitted with spark arresting stacks.

Snapshots From Thursday Kansas City NNGC 2014

These pics are from Thursday during the National Narrow Gauge Convention, from the Contest Room and one layout I visited. They are in no particular order, nor do they represent all the models entered or even present at the time I was there.  Most if not all are just plain stunning in person. These will give you a snapshot, I'll add the rest as comments to follow. I hope you enjoy them. (Most you can click on and get the larger pic) --Geoff Bunza

Shipbuilding Industry for a Layout

I have found some incredible photos of a shipbuilding industry that relied heavily on the Canadian Pacific Railway for its operations.  The advantage to us layout builders is this shipbuilding industry could fit on almost any size layout.

HO Spectrum 4-6-0 and 4-4-0 cabs

I hope this is an easy one.  Can anyone verify (or refute) that both versions of the Spectrum 4-6-0 as well as the 4-4-0 share the same cab?  I know that there are a couple different cabs offered, but are they interchangeable?  I suspect that they are, but I'd like to know for sure.
