Steam locos

Broadway Limited Imports

I have just started running my ATSF 4-8-4 northern steam loco on my small 4x6 home layout. My EZ Command controller (DCC) can only use 10 functions. How can I change the numbering of different functions. I go to a club layout that uses Digitrax.

Vertical easements and rigid framed steam locos

I know this sort of relates to the discussion about artificially distressing track, but I did a quick search and did not see any specifics for vertical easements.  My interest is related to N scale FreeMo modules in particular, and the fact that we may have many different types of locos and rolling stock passing through.

6029 Garratt under trial

Hi all,

For a period of several years the Canberra ARHS (Australian Railway Historical Society) group  have been quietly working away to return the former New South Wales Government  Railways AD60 class Garratt locomotive 6029 to service.  The AD60 class were the largest standard-gauge Garratt locomotives ever built, with a 4-8-4+4-8-4 wheel arrangement. Only 4 of the 42 of these locomotives built remain in existence, and Canberra ARHS has their 6029 moving under its own power again.

Action on the Inglenook

There were still a few more fundamentals to become acquainted with before we could get rolling. Because there was no scenic treatment of any kind on this Inglenook the kids’ attention was focused on the trackwork and it quickly became apparent to me that even this was entirely new to them. I showed them how flipping the lever on the ground throws moved the switch points. Even that tiny bit of animation drew exclamations of surprise, “Oh, I get it!”

Layout Progress Update Plus Other Stuff

Mid July 2014 Progress Update

Over the past month, I have been checking out some of my steam engines, running trains, installing decoders, worked on fixing the shorting issue with the insulfrog turnouts, and began work on the support structure for the main level. There are four videos in this update.

San Pablo Valley RR #51 (Backdating a Spectrum 4-4-0)

A new engine is close to joining the SPV roster - #51, the line's only standard gauge power.

#51 started as a Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0 (the "Modern Baldwin" version).  Out of the box, she looked like this:

MDC Shay Kit Build - Powered by a Modified NWSL Stanton Drive -

I have been working on several Keystone Shay Kits, looking for alternative ways to power this static model using as few or none of the parts from the old and long out of production NWSL Power conversion kits. (More on this at a later date)

First op session for the Wheeling Freight Terminal

Last week a friend visited and we operated my home layout for the first time. Of course this doesn't happen at the drop of a hat. I spent a few days preparing for the session. I have operated on many layouts, but this is my first home layout to operate since 2001. Details and photos are posted on my blog

Anyone ever use a sound cam with a Bachmann HO shay? With the Bachmann climax?

Looking for recommendations, hints, warnings, etc. about using a cam to get a WOW decoder to support the shay's 3 cylinders; also not sure if it's worth the effort for the gearing that complicates the relationship between cylinder vs. wheel rotation ratios of a climax.
