Steam locos

Mounting the water tower

Worked on installing the water tower today.

First mounted it on a piece of foam core as a base and painted a base coat of earth color.  I used foam as foundation for small hill and will add to it and cover with vegetation later.

When I first put it in place was a bit to close as the fill pipe would hit the engines, and had to move it back a bit.

Justice & Hangtree?

Got this Oriental Limited Powerhouse 2-4-4-2 on ebay.
Lettered for the "Justice & Hangtree" I wonder if anyone can tell me anything about this model railroad?
There has been quite a lot of equipment for sale on ebay from several sellers.
I also bought a reefer and a boxcar, most of the equipment are quite nicely painted.
Many hoppers suggest an eastern location.
Sellers are from Kentucky and Ohio (Cincinnati area) if that's any clue?

Isolating DC-71 Type Motors

I have 2 steam engines that I just revived from 4 junkers, that I want to convert to DCC. The question is how to isolate the DC-71 style motor.

Do I use

1. Nylon screws to secure the motor to the frame and further insulate between the motor and frame with electrical or kapton tape, or

2. Would just insulating the brush holder from the retaining spring on top of the motor work. Exactly as the brush on the opposite side of the motor, or

3. A combination of the two?

Am I over simplifying this or have I missed something?

Dipping a toe...

So I am officially dipping my toe into the dark pool of soul sucking model railroading that is On30 (which seems to be a trend, based on other posts), as I bid on and won a two truck shay on eBay.

General questions about the loco, as I await it's delivery.

Taking the (On30) Plunge

OK ... went to look, and couldn't turn back ... the price including shipping half-way around the globe was too much to resist.

I've purchased a Bachmann On30 4-4-0 inside frame loco with tender.  It will take 3 weeks to arrive (assuming no delays or lost in transit), so have some time to play with some ideas ....

RR Challenger sound decoder

Hi all,

I have a Rivarossi 4-6-6-4 locomotive and I'd like to add a sound decoder to it.

A friend is offering ma an ESU Loksound V.4 decoder at a good price, and he could also load the sound file for me, but on the ESU website they only have the Big Boy sound file, not the specific one for the Challenger.

Are the BigBoy sounds so much different than the ones of a Challenger?

Adding weight to a Bachmann Steam Loco

I'm posting this as it may be useful to other folks with steam locos.

I just purchased an HO Bachmann 2-8-4 Berkshire steam loco from MRH sponsor Yankee Dabbler. It's not a spectrum model. I model in the diesel era, but I think steam locos are cool. So I got one. My intention was to use it to haul a "museum" passenger train consisting of 7 heavyweight passenger cars.

B'mann HO K4 - What do I do with it?

At a train show yesterday, I purchased a Bachmann PRR K4 Pacific for the princely sum of $20.  I don't really need a K4, and I seriously doubt that one ever ran on the Danville & Western, or even that it could have made it if they tried.  However, the price was just too good to pass up, so I bought it.  Now I'm asking for some advice on what to do with it.
