From Stagnant to Steaming: Revise, Refurbish, Expand & Finish an HO layout

Last month (May), a man contacted me through our shared Local Hobby Shop:  He had a 3'x16' HO layout that was half done.  He also had grandsons who are 7- and 8-years old and who really wanted to run trains with Grandpa.

The challenge was that, ever since being diagnosed with cancer a year ago, between the chemo and the medication he just didn't have the energy to continue work on the layout.  So he needed a strapping young man with the muscles and know-how to get the layout done and running well.

Electrical couplers for Multiple Unit Cars?

I would like to be able to electrically connect my MU cars together so that the whole train  picks up power.

My MU cars consist of mostly Imperial Hobby Productions Arrow IIIs and Arrow IIs,  with some silverliners.

Space on the bottom of the MU is limited, and i don't think i could have a coupler and an electrical plug running between cars at the same time  (except for between the "A" and "B" car of the married pairs).

Scale Model Animation 5 – Building Building Animation

Model animation—bringing models to life—adds enormously to the interest and enjoyment of any layout or individual model! We notice things when they move, and we often notice things only when they change. But change can also be sensed in light intensity, patterns, color, and sound. Let’s see what can bring an otherwise static building to life.

Bachmann Alco S4/ Broadway limited SW7 slow speed operation

I'm just getting back into the hobby after several years of inactivity. I like the looks and sound of both the S 4 and the SW 7. I've watched you tube videos of both units for sound. However, videos are sometimes jerky and jumpy.

How do both of these units perform in slow speed switching?

Any comments from owners of these models?

I'm planning on using an NCE procab DCC system for my small shelf switching layout.

Thanks

Starting over, best DCC for me?

First and foremost, let me say that at this point I am not interested in RailPro or radio control systems in general.  The Tam Valley system is interesting and something I would like to experiment with, but right now I don't see myself investing in it for every model, even if I could find the space and money (which I can't).  While I am not opposed to the concept of systems other than DCC, it would take a lot to convince me that the investment in a different system is worthwhile and wise over the long term.

The situation at the moment:

DCC Change

To All: I have been operating with a Super Chief DCC System by Digitrax for a number of years now.

I seem to have problems with the system every time I use it!.I have come to the end. I am going

try out NCE's Pro Cab starter system and see if their system suits me better. I have no reason

GP 40 Needs ditch lights

I need some help wiring some ditch lights. The picture is of a Atlas GP 40 Gold series. The plug in the middle of the picture is for the head lights and number boards. It has 6 plugs, but only two are being used. When I plug the ditch lights in I can not get them to work at all. If the touch the head light wires the work fine. Any ideas how to make this work?
