Decoder Operated Turnable -- toggling from control panel

Some months ago I got the bright idea that I wanted to operate the motor of my Atlas turntable using a decoder. So I installed an inexpensive loco decoder, configured it and found it worked pretty well. But it didn't take too long to find that selecting the turntable on my Digitrax Zephyr got old pretty fast. Having the simplicity of a button on my control panel started to appeal. But the one nice aspect of having it controlled by the throttle was variable speed and reversability.

Mt. Coffin & Columbia River - 23"x41" n-scale layout

Been working (slowly) on a 23"x41" n-scale layout based on the cannery industry along the Columbia River (Oregon) in the early 1900s.

Thought I'd share some construction picts since its start at the beginning of the year.

Digitrax PM 42 Question

I have installed a PM42 on my layout for short management. I have four power districts and a DB150 power booster and control system. It is definitely all wired correctly. My issue is this, when I create a constant short in one district, the other districts are momentarily disrupted before they resume normal operation.  This means that the locos actually stop for half a second, sound is disrupted and the lights blink once, before they resume.

SurroundTraxx released. Any reviews?

I hear SoundTraxx is finally shipping the SurroundTraxx.   Of course I noticed quite a price jump, but that is not surprising considering the unit has been in the pipe for many years.

Anyone have their hands on one?  Looking for a review and the actual instruction manual... not the sell sheets on the SoundTraxx site.

Battery and R/C trains

I have reviewed the forums for previous discussion on using R/C with batteries instead of using track power and it appears most of these discussion are rather old.  So I thought I would start a new discussion and hopefully get the latest information on R/C with batteries.

Building my shelf layout(s)

It is time for me to update this introduction. In fact it is way past time! (today is November 10, 2020) I am now starting on my third shelf layout. The first was meant to be a "chainsaw" layout. A place to experiment and learn but not last long. It was around for nine years. Before The end of that time I started another layout. This time it was more of a prototype layout. It was based on the Santa Fe McPherson (Kansas) branch. The four 6'x18" sections of that layout will hopefully be incorporated into a new bedroom sized layout.

Confused about Digitrax switch machine controllers

I have downloaded and read all the manuals concerning what I want to do with turnout control, but am confused with two Digitrax modules. I want to control Tortoise switch machines, and will use BDL168 occupancy detectors. I understand the SE8c uses the BDL168 for its input information, and it controls signaling as well as turnouts. I also understand the DS64 controls the turnouts. I need help understanding these two modules: If I use the SE8c do I need the DS64 as well? Is it either/or, and if I need just one, which is the "better" solution?
